Stupid idea for penalty yardage

What if on an offensive penalty the defense could opt to either have the sticks moved OR have the offense moved backwards?

i.e. you could have 3rd and 10 at the 30, a holding is called and the defense could move you backward to 3rd and 20 at the 20 or leave you at the 30 but now you have to get to the 50 instead of the 40.

This would mostly come into play near midfield.

It would just add another little layer to things.

So my opponent would either have third and 20 on the 20, or third and 20 at the 30? Why would I ever pick the second option? I must be missing something.

Only place I see this is a question is when it is half the distance to the goal line penalty to increase yardage to go vs having team closer to a potential safety.

That’s what made me think about it. The half the distance thing is often like no penalty at all.

1st and 10 at the 2. Offensive facemask penalty either 1st and 11 at the 1 or 1st and 25 at the 2. I would take the 1st and 25 at the 2.

Problem is NFL will almost always favor the offense so would never consider it

I always wanted ‘offsetting’ penalties to be counted, just remove the lower from the higher number.

holding on offense and defense? ball moves back only 5 yards.

but I’m also not a fan of the pass interference spot foul. that can be a HUGE swing for something that can be pretty subjective.

Yes, I think it should be a spot foul but no more than 20 yards (maybe even 15) max penalty.
