T.J. Hockenson ranked as a top-five tight end for 2024 by PFF

Hockenson ranked 4th [PFF 2023 overall grade 78.8]

LaPorta ranked 5th [PFF 2023 overall grade 80.1]

Maybe they think he’s going to be JJ McCarthy’s best friend?

Anyway, the LaPorta ranking came with the following caveat:

Replace one Hawkeye for another, and don’t lose a wink of sleep. LaPorta exploded onto the NFL landscape and had one of the greatest rookie seasons in NFL history for a tight end. Only three tight ends in NFL history caught at least 10 touchdowns in Year 1: Mike Ditka, Rob Gronkowski and Sam LaPorta. Don’t be surprised if LaPorta contends for a top-two spot at the end of the year.

Is Hock even playing football before mid season? Kerby blew his acl into another dimension. And I believe that happened in December…late in the season.

The QUICKEST ive seen from that type of injury is almost a year.
Unless hes got a super surgeon and kills in rehab.
Injured in December 2023.
Vikings bye is week 6
So by Mid October week 7 at the EARLIEST i could see him come back. And i DOUBT hell be 100%

Having watched the two for the last 3 years, LaPorta is SOOOOO much better all around, yac, and 3rd down.

Hock is a stat machine but goes down like melting butter when touched or over the middle when the game is on the line.

This may be one of Holmes greatest moves to off load a good but overpriced player for a young top talent with essentially the pick.

Holmes was very lucky to decide to do that move.

And… the knock on Hock is he can’t block….

definitely not a strength for him.

hes on IR to start the season for sure, they signed Robert Tonyan some weeks ago, and Nkeal Harry was just turned into a TE

along with Mundt and Olvier thats 4 TEs not including Hock so yeah, it seems likely hes not playing most likely till our game against them when they comee off a bye week.

Coming out of college they sold him as a great blocker. The NFL film confirms that is a lie.

Cousins was peppering Hock with targets before he popped his achilles. Will be interesting to see if that continues with a rookie qb.

Probably will, as I have zero confidence JJ is gonna push the ball down field often or with a lot of success w/o JJ35 making 50/50 ball domination at Calvinesque levels.

…and we put the higher graded player lower… uh… because… well…uh…

I know we all love our guys best and we all love perusing these lists, but some of these rankings are real headscratchers. This doesn’t happen to be Jalani Tavai over Alex Anzalone, or Caleb Williams 3 spots lower than Jared Goff type nutty but…

First is never start a land war in Asia. The second is never draft a TE in the first round.

A golden NFL rule.

TJ Hockenson run block grade weeks 1-8 in DET: 48.3, 58th out of 74 TEs

TJ Hockenson run block grade weeks 9-13 in MIN: 68.4, 9th out of 74 TEs
