No no no no no…you guys don’t want him. He’s never even called a play before!!
He’s supposed to be the heir to Ben’s position here. I have to believe Tanner’s loyalty is to the Lions and that Ben will have somebody else in mind.
We’ll see. Hopefully not for another month, but we’ll see.
I would rather Ben take Tanner and leave us with Hank. If those are his OC options.
Reportedly, Hank Fraley
WTF Man! Leave us something! Dayam!
We do NOT want to lose Fraley. He has been excellent here. Plus, I would have to believe there is a massive difference between coaching a position group like OL and actually having the chops to design, implement and continuously evolve an NFL offense week to week month to month year to year. That said, Ben will be doing all that wherever he goes. Guy like Fraley could have the title and the salary and run game responsibilities, but in reality Ben will be both HC and OC.
It’s gonna suck no matter who he takes. Bad enough losing him.
If he takes Tanner, maybe we could bring John Morton back home to be OC. He’s the passing game coordinator in Denver right now.
Or maybe Ben can tab Morton as the OC in DC and leave us with even less damage than imagined.
I realize I’m in the minority here, but I think our success on offense is as much based on attitude and belief as it is scheme and tactics.
Ben is clearly a bright guy and very good at his job. The offense is buttoned up and the parts are complimentary of each other. His layering of calls is impressive and his game-plans are thoughtful and usually well-conceived.
But this isn’t - mad scientist Mike McDaniel scenario here. It’s mostly WCO greatest hits with some Perkins-Erhardt stuff and more gap/power than many WCOs. When people say he’s creative (and I do believe Ben is) it’s mostly little wrinkles.
I really do believe we’ll be okay on that side as long as our OL can carry on with how it’s been playing. At the risk of being reductionist when you can be top 2-3 in the league up front it’s hard to not be a plus offense. That’s what makes the Eagles face plant so impressive to me.
While I also attribute more of our offense to Dan than most, (agreeing with your points) there’s still the daily grind that Ben’s able to direct and delegate. Taking him out of the mix and 1 or 2 key position coaches means you’re now looking for someone who delegates as well and be on the details at the same time. That’s a frickin’ talent. You don’t just replace him or Fraley without there being an adjustment period, which you hope isn’t evident in next years W/L column.
2 other coaches that don’t get brought up much that could be potential play callers are Randel El and Brunell. Both tons of playing and coaching experience. Both been on staff all 3 seasons. Clearly they know Goff’s strengths and weaknesses very well.
Sure. But generally those aren’t the qualities that most analysts seem to suggest that we will miss. Perhaps they should.
I do expect a small step back on offense. But if Jack makes a jump and we address our outside corner deficiency and a another pass rush option or two I think we could be looking at a massive step forward on defense.

Then again Gibbs and LaPorta are rookies. And Jamo starting to improve. Potentially we are even better.
Can St. Brown and Sewell still get better? I think they can
It’s possible. Especially end of year.
We have enough skill players. Gotta get back to restocking that Oline for the future.
Jesus. I had Tanner penciled in as the next OC and didn’t even think about the fact Ben might take him with.
But with that said, if he is up for OC with both teams I wonder if it will play a factor that the Lions gave him his first job in the NFL four years ago. And Dan ultimately decided to keep him one year later.

I mean surely he knows he’s about to be able to be our OC or follow Ben? Maybe he’s just taking the interview for networking purposes. Didn’t realized he’d worked with Harbaugh before.

Why is he the guy penciled in?
I thought Scottie Montgomery was the next OC if/when Ben goes
