For sure it’s a problem. You always hear about it in basketball, guys love to sign for states without income tax. The property taxes in those states are usually a bitch, but compared to what those people make up for in income tax savings, it’s nothing. To us plebes, property taxes can get brutal. I might as well be renting the house I own.

Ohtani’s deal is structured so the majority of the deal is deferred so that he won’t realize the income until after he’s had a chance to move out of California

well state taxes do have some benefit. Like educated healthy people. Generally the less, or zero, tax states don’t do well in those areas. But certain people don’t like paying for the general welfare of others. Until they also need it, of course.
This is a gotcha that people of certain political persuasion use to dunk on people of other political persuasion
The reality is not as convincing. When looking at effective tax burden, of which state income tax is only a part, the story is not entirely different but it is certainly more nuanced. Population density is a more significant factor in a state’s ability to provide services
