The argument for and against drafting a QB round 1

Not hard to go get the guy you covet just ask Carolina and Denver and Washington and New England and the list goes on. Teams just don’t go get their QB when they feel like it like it’s something easy to do. As far as trading up in the future wouldn’t that be the same as mortgaging the future now except you don’t have to give up extra picks?

This is a great point.

I just checked… looks like Pleasant joined the staff on 1/28/21, and the Stafford trade was announced 1/30/21. I wonder if any conversation took place between Holmes and Pleasant about the trade???

I have been on the side that I believe it is hard to pass on a QB if the staff feels he is a true franchise QB that could be a top 5 talent. My thought is that guys like Brady, Mahomes, Rodgers, etc. keep a team in the title discussion every year.

I am also of the opinion that Goff can be a very good starting QB in the NFL.
Good starting QBs that may not necessarily be top 5 starters can win Super Bowls. More than 1 even. It is just more likely there will be peaks and valleys depending on the cast around the QB.

I honestly don’t think Fields will be available at #7 overall, so I think this is all for interesting debate.
If he is available… I hope they have done their homework to put the Lions on the best path forward.

IMO… there is little risk taking Fields at #7 OA because he and Goff would still have considerable value for the Lions. They could trade 1 of them now, in a year… or 2 years. I think the long view is the way to go when it comes to the QB position.

Jesus have i shown to be a moron? When I post do I seem stupid? I said 7 and 8 ++++++++++++

I know what it takes to get to #1/2. I live pro football and lions football. I’m well aware of everything NFL.

Also if the lions gave a massive package to say the jets for #2 they would’ve had a ridiculous amount of ammo to get Deshaun Watson. And yes, I do know that his status is in limbo at the moment. I’m just saying if you give up a huge package to get your FRANCHISE GUY (which doesn’t fall into anyone’s lap. If he does he probably isn’t as sought after as he is on this board). Fields isn’t getting to #7 so the fact that we put so much emphasis on the guy is nuts. And if he does, that should tell you that the talent evaluators of the NFL don’t think he is an elite franchise QB. 4 QBs could go before him! And this board talks about it as if We are passing on Patrick Mahomes.

We traded for Goff. Deal with it. We chose the Rams deal because of Goff

I’ve been here a week and I can’t stand it

First of all @JDrik09 welcome aboard!

And I’ll disagree that it was Goff that pushed the trade over the edge, I’d probably say it was the 2 first round draft picks that did it, and I believe we got the 2nd first because we took Goff and his albatross of a contract.

I’d love it if he works out my man, and I’ll happily eat the crow if he’s a probowler!

So Stafford was only worth a 2022 1st round pick and a 2021 3rd?

Goff had negative trade value?

The panthers offered #8 and more (I don’t recall what said package was).

Goff had trade value, granted not much. But the lions wanted him. He wasn’t just a thrown in.

And for the record (again) I am ok with Goff. I want to see what he can do. I am not in the camp of (and I don’t think many if any of the supporters are) Goff is a sure fire franchise QB. But I want to give him a shot. He is more than good enough to play QB for the next 3 years while we build a good roster.

That’s the prevailing theory outside of Lions fandom.

Easy man… not being hostile here. I didn’t see the “+” sign either. I am also open to differing opinions. I think it is important because none of really know what the plans are in any NFL front office.

I do believe that Goff is the QB they will build around for at least the next 2 years. I have stated in several posts I think he can be an above average starter… and maybe better. I also posted that I don’t believe Fields will fall to #7… so we agree there as well. This is just debate about the slim possibility… which is interesting.

I also would say that trading with Carolina instead of the Rams deal would have been a bad choice… because I see the value in Goff to the deal. I think he added a minimum of high 2nd pick value to that trade… which made the Rams offer much better than Carolina’s IMO.

The Rams deal was better in terms of capital… but also added the benefit of giving the Lions a starting caliber QB that allows them maximum flexibilty to build the team how they would like.

Goff was benched last year for an UDFA and would have stayed benched if Wolford hadn’t gotten hurt, but yeah he made the pro. bowl one year I guess so lets pass on a franchise QB

Lol I just am not meant for discussion boards. My bad…

I’m checking out :v:t2:

The math doesn’t add up. That would be to say that a current year top 10 pick is worth the same as a next year 1st round pick that is perceived to be in the back half of the draft.

Agree… and now that Wentz and Darnold have been traded for significant picks… I think it shows Goff would command a decent return in a trade as well.

I think the hand surgery the week prior may have played a factor.

Very well put, brother. Completely agree. Goff, I feel, will be easily top 15. Good enough to win

Delete, abort, abandon ship on this one!

But it does put your perspective…into perspective.

Or it was good cover for what McVay really wanted to do…and seems more obvious now that they dumped him.

My perspective is were freaking morons if we pass on a franchise QB and would rather pay Goff $30 million a year instead.

Also, Lions fans first so would love to eat crow here.

Boyle is better than all but two of the QB’s in this draft at this point.

This narrative started with PFT Mike Florio who hated the trade from day one and was trying his best to create a negative on it.

He started some stories claiming the Lions had no interest from teams wanting Stafford and that the Lions wouldn’t get much if anything for him. Then the block buster trade came out proving him wrong and full of BS.

So he then tried to claim Stafford wasn’t worth that much and the only reason the Lions got that much was because they had to take Goff. And that it was more about getting rid of Goff for the Rams than it was about getting Stafford. He claimed the Rams reeked of desperation and we’re willing to get rid of Goff at all costs.

Then the other trade offers came out showing teams were willing to pay up for Stafford. Then quotes came out from the Rams FO and by Burkett stating Florio’s reports were 100% false. That the Lions wanted Goff.

But Florio never backed down on his take and continued to blast the trade every way he could think of.

People latched on to his narratives and they soon became fact for many.

You brought up something very specific. And now all you have is vague replies?

Like I said, your perspective makes alot more sense now. Goff might be a flaming pile of poo for us. But your perspective in foreshadowing it makes alot more sense now.
