He’s my favorite player ever
They aren’t all timers, but I always liked the combo of Bennie Blades and William White.
Antrell Rolle played CB at Miami but some safety as a Pro. So he’d be the third. But I’m going with that USC group. The top two are comparable but USC’s third guy is just so much better.
Seems like a lot on here thinks Ed Reed was a better safety than Ronnie Lott. That surprises me.
Seems like a Lott
So I would say Lott was old NFL best while Reed was modern NFL best. Lott played when the run game was way more important and the game was more violent. Reed played with the modern passing game and the more diverse skill set in the offense.
Both are great and if I wanted a safety that was going to come up and stop the run Lott is my guy. But if I want a witch doctor who could predict and blow up plays pre-snap Reed is my guy.
Both great but different
Reed was probably a better center fielder than Lott but I would take Lott over Reed.
They were both so good, so its a little like splitting hairs. But Lott wasn’t really a safety at USC was he? I know he played corner for the first part of his career, then switched halfway through. Still completely awesome that you could plug him in at corner if needed.
Clark and Polamalu are maybe the last “best duo” until our Joseph and Branch.
Roman and Sharper back then weren’t bad for the packers, but I’m not putting them into any kind of historical pairing like Clark and Polamalu are.
Always loved me some Kenny Easley …
I wasn’t born for his college career. But my understanding AA’s that he was flipped to CB as a rookie out of need in SF and preceded to immediately be the league’s best. Gemini on a google search says he played safety at USC. ![]()
Yes he was great…I was like 5 when I started watching football so I didn’t really get to see a whole lot of him because he retired too soon
Need to lock them in at safety. As good as Branch is at nickel I’m hoping no more injuries that would move him back there again. Need a full season of this combo. Their chemistry is also top notch. Kerby is a leader out there. Need the CB’s to gel and stay healthy.
Yeah same; too young to remember. I do remember he played CB for the 49ers right out of the gate and I thought he switched to safety once he slowed down after like four/five years. What an amazing athlete though. I also remember later he started at SS too and was good.
Yep. He definitely started at CB. According to Wikipedia he played LCB, RCB, SS and FS in his career. Excelled at all of them as well. I grew up in the Bay Area until 1988 and the lore I always heard was that he was switched to CB as a rookie and was awesome but that they always wanted him back at Safety eventually. ![]()
IMO he’s the greatest secondary player of all time. Perhaps it should be Night Train Lane but tough comparing eras. Deion was the greatest at man coverage but he was pretty disinterested in some other aspects.
Yes. In fact, many of my friends pitied me for my relentless attachment to the Lions. It was my version of dragging a cross with a crown of thorns.
I thought Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor were a really good duo.
Only played seven years.
He’s in the HOF!
