That is true enough. Zierlein doesn’t seem to think he can shake guys underneath. I’m not so sure on that. I’ve watched him a lot and he is pretty crafty in the five to ten yard zone. I also think he would dovetail with Goff nicely with his style. Goff will give him a catchable ball to RAC with and he is quick to transition underneath to RAC. He plays WR like an outfielder in baseball and I love those types. The body control and naturalness for the position are traits I love.
I mainly worry about two things with him. First, he’s not super explosive and I prefer explosive perimeter guys. I know he has some good combine times, but I don’t see a real burst on the field.
Second, I think he frame is a little frail. He looks smaller on film than his lisited size. Those aren’t necessarily deal breakers. When he was getting talked about as a 2nd rounder I thought somebody was going to get a stupendous value. As a top 10 pick, I think he might leave fans slightly disappointed. He’ll produce though and he’s safe. He’d give us yet another solid 3rd down option.
I’m really curious to see how fast he runs the 40 though.
I still have nightmares about Charles Rogers, Mike Williams and Roy Williams(Thanks Dallas)
I see more pressing needs than taking another WR in the 1st round. 20 Points doesn’t do shit when the Defense gives up 30. I am all for making the Offense better but I feel like we have a fantastic WR room. Would JSN help? Absolutely. But to me it is very unrealistic.
The defense definitely improved towards the end of the season but you can’t tell me we don’t need a CB, DT or LB before another WR.
We don’t have a fantastic WR room… we have two role players in Raymond and Reynolds who are solid in a pinch, but not true NFL starters. Not to mention both are in the final year, and both are turning 30…
So we have a WR1 who has one catch, and a great slot guy under contract beyond this year…
Let’s be clear though…. We scored nearly 30, and allowed just 20 per the last 10… not the other way around
You’re talking about our #1 WR right? The one with 101 catches and 1200 yards? The one with a 90.7 PFF rating? You’re smoking crack if you don’t think ARSB is our #1 WR. Get outta here. You’re making it sound like he’s just another guy. He is going to be here for a long time as our #1 regardless of what Jamo and anyone else does.
I will say at one point I was completely against this idea, but this thread has me coming around a little bit.
I will first say, this is a completely moot point if we resign Chark or another starting caliber WR.
I could not stomach this at 6. If we dropped down to the early teens then it’s a lot easier to get on board.
Jameson, St Brown, and JSN would have the chance to be the best WR trio in the NFL for the next 4+ years (no chance we let ARSB walk). When WRs are making more than any position that isn’t a QB, that is more valuable than most realize.
We would likely wind up trading Jameson or JSN in a few years though as we couldn’t keep all three long term.
You should also have nightmares about how one day we had a great DT rotation, then the next day we had nobody. We said back then that we should have never passed on Aaron Donald. Staggering the contracts is a lesson learned from back then. DJ Chark’s contract is expired. Khalif Raymond is 29 and his contract will expire after this season. Josh Reynolds is 28 and his contract will expire after this season.
I would rather not spend a 1st round pick but I can see the wisdom. Particularly since WR is one of the more expensive positions to pick up in free agency.
You just compared him to a guy that averaged over 15.5 yards per catch through most of his career. Maybe a better version of Baltimore Steve Smith- sure. The guy catching 70 yard TD bombs in Carolina from shitty QBs? Nope sorry
When you consider Steve smith lined up outside, and was a top 4-5 deep threat in the NFL for 6-7 years, you can see why our slot magician who averages 10.6 ypc isn’t really a comp?
RA- has zero catches over 50 yards…. Smith had15 over 60!!!
Resign Chark ar 11-12 per for 4 yrs if possible. That gives you a 6’4" pro bowl caliber wr in his prime that’s also a 4.3 blazer. Quite cheap if he stays healthy.
When he came back healthy and was on the same page with Goff he was good. It would also be the first time since his JR year of college he didn’t have to learn a new offense. Id expect a strong yr from him.
The idea of a 4.6, 4.7 big guy for jump balls is one i don’t get. Seems like a waste. Goff is risk averse, he isn’t throwing jump balls, he wants separation. Chark gives you that big target in the red zobe along with the TEs, but he can separate. We also still have a deep threat if Jamo goes down. It really opens the middle up if you send Jamo and Chark deep with Ra or Swift underneath.
Your also keeping what appeared to be good chemistry in the WR room, and Goff intact.
Add Robinson to the mix, and the offense in yr 2, should be even better.
We have a top 5-7 QB on a team friendly contract. You’d spent your premier capital on a guy with a 70% chance to bust, that likely wouldn’t play for 2 years, and even more likely would never be as good as Goff?
Especially knowing that Ben is gone next year, and the next OC might want some input on the style of QB?
That’s the funny part…. Many posters are in the-
I want Carter or Anderson
I want a high upside elite QB talent
I want a lockdown CB
Hypothetically- let’s say we manage free agency with those thoughts…
Draft day-
Stroud
Young
W Anderson
AR15
J Carter
the fact that Gonzalez was considered a late 1st, early 2nd for much of the off-season, and recently started climbing is tied directly to the Lions and Falcons CB needs.
If the Lions sign Sutton and Peters and the Falcons sign Dean… then I doubt either Gonzalez or Witherspoon crack the top 10
The Chiefs have an “opportunistic” defense and a great offense, it’s working. Flame throwers and ball hawks- that’s how you protect a lead…
I’m not interested in hearing “what we can get away with at RB or WR…” I want to know which players are most likely to be Pro Bowl level guys in the NFL and which guys could be in the rookie of the year convo-
Jamal Williams at age 28 or Bijan Robinson…. You saw the difference between Jamal and A Jones behind the same OL in GB…. Then you saw the difference between Swift and Swaggy here….
You saw what Reynolds did in Tennessee and what K Raymond did in Jax… then what they did here-
Swaggy, Wright, Zylstra, E Brown, Raymond, and Reynolds are guys we “got away with” not guys we build around in my opinion…
Same with Jacobs, Romeo, Buggs, AA, Walker…. I think we will see massive growth from Okudah, Joseph, Hutch, Problem, Paschal and McNeill (if we get a real starter next to him)
I agree that defense is a bigger need. But you don’t take a lesser player over a better one, no matter where they play. If you have them graded the same, sure, but the only defensive players I have anywhere close to JSN are Anderson, Carter, and Gonzalez, and of those I’m not sure our FO is gonna go for Carter or Gonzalez, and I think Anderson will be gone.
