The Den New User Guide

Welcome to The Den

Welcome to The Den — a Detroit Lions community that’s been around in some form since 1998.

This isn’t a brand-new forum. It’s a long-standing home for local and displaced Lions fans who live and breathe this team.

In the words of spike804, a longtime member “Nothing since 1957 … but we’re working on it.”

If you’re new here, the best thing you can do first is read for a bit. Get a feel for how conversations flow, what’s already being discussed, and how people engage.

But don’t overthink it. Once you’ve got your bearings, jump in and share your take. That’s what keeps this place alive.

The Basics

  • Topic: A full conversation (what some places call a “thread”)
  • Post: A single reply within a topic
  • OP (Original Post): The first post that sets the direction
  • User: You — once registered, you can post, reply, like, and more

Reading the Room (Important)

Before creating a new topic:

  • Search first — duplicate topics get ignored or merged
  • Read existing discussions — it helps you understand tone and context
  • Ease in — like walking into a bar on game day, you don’t start yelling immediately

The Den has history. Respect it, learn it, then contribute to it.

Creating a Topic

When you’re ready to start something new:

  • Click “New Topic”
  • Write a clear, simple title
  • Share your thoughts, news, or question

If it’s already being discussed elsewhere, your topic may get merged — that’s normal.

Replying to Posts

There are two main ways to reply:

  • Reply to the topic → use the main Reply button at the bottom
  • Reply to a specific post → use the Reply button on that post

Replying to a specific post will link your response directly to it, making conversations easier to follow.

You can also:

  • Highlight text to quote it
  • Type @username to mention someone
  • Use :+1: to like posts instead of replying with “this”

Tags (Optional)

Tags help organize content, but they’re not required.

  • Most Lions-related discussions don’t need tags
  • If your topic goes beyond that, tags can help

Example:

  • General discussion → off-topic

Use them when helpful — ignore them when not.

Pinned Topics

Pinned topics are shown at the top of lists because they matter.

  • They often contain rules, announcements, or important info
  • It might be a popular topic (i.e. Game Thread) or Draft thread
  • Some will unpin automatically after you read them
  • Others stay pinned until manually dismissed

If you’re new, it’s worth reading these.

Locked Topics

A locked topic means:

  • No new replies can be added
  • Usually because the discussion ran its course or got out of hand

You can still read everything — just not respond.

Likes, Bookmarks, and Notifications

  • :+1: Like posts to show appreciation
  • :bookmark: Bookmark posts to save them for later
  • :bell: You’ll be notified when:
    • Someone replies to you
    • Mentions you (@username)
    • Quotes your post

You can adjust all of this in your preferences.

Supporting The Den

Ads help keep The Den running. They cover hosting, infrastructure, and the ongoing work that keeps the community active.

We try to keep them as unobtrusive as possible, but they are part of what allows the site to exist.

If you’d prefer an ad-free experience, you can upgrade to VIP.

Final Thought

The Den isn’t just about the Lions — it’s about the community that’s been built around them for decades.

So take a look around, get comfortable…

…and when you’re ready, join the conversation.
