The Incredible Comeback of Jared Goff!

I still struggle a bit with this narrative.

What he is in reality is a very good QB who is not a runner and because of that lack of foot speed he is constantly graded out lower than his actual performance.

And the comeback discussion is a bit odd also. He was never benched to my recollection. His numbers have always been solid. The obvious issue was McVay and Goff no longer had effective communication and most of that was on McVay.

I get he came here appearing to be damaged goods. And I was a bit indifferent but assumed the Lions would need to upgrade him at some point. But he has proven to be consistently good and present and also available (durable).

Was that a benching or due to Goff thumb/hand injury?

Considering that goff played after wolford got hurt, you do the math

Goff is an Elite QB who was sold out and scapegoated by his ex-head coach.
It’s all good, though. McVay already looks like a fool, and it’s only going to get worse.

I’m aware of that, yet it doesn’t really answer the question which is fine.
Just disregard the question wasn’t aware it was contentious.

Sorry not intending to be contentious, just short.

Overall my recollection is that he was healthy enough to play but mcvay put in wolford. This article frames it as a benching and the key strain between mcvay and goff.

'A taste of John Wolford' ruined Goff-McVay relationship.

After the Rams lost to the winless Jets in Week 15 and then to the Seahawks a week later last season, Goff sat for John Wolford to play with a playoff spot up for grabs. The Rams won with Wolford, who started the playoff game but was replaced by Goff after suffering a neck injury.

To be fair I was just looking at his games played. I had assumed year 1 he did not start from the beginning.

But since he became starter it appears he players pretty much every game. He does have a few missed games but I am assuming injuries.

Any I just do not view him the same way I view Mayfield who is much more of a comeback story.

Hard to disagree. I would say the only way to justify would be by saying the narrative at the time of the trade was goff was negative 1st round pick level value in a trade and that stuck around way too long with some still trumpeting that narrative.

Mayfield was legitimately on the scrap heap so i dont disagree on his comeback being more pronounced

Yes Wolford did indeed start and on his second drive got knocked cuckoo, he led the destined to be victorious Rams to ZERO points but was credited with the win

We all know who the real winning QB was that game

Oh and for the record JG had thumb surgery just after the before mentioned Seahawks game week 16, Wolford then started and squeaked out a W vs hapless AZ and inexplicably was named starter vs Seattle in the wildcard game

He was a f’n soldier that game, especially under the circumstances. And people forget, I believe he had two dropped TDs in the SB. You can feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

I think Goff was a week from broken thumb surgery.

Wolford replaced Goff.

McVay wanted Wolford, despite Goffs health status.

But we are talking about a neck injury vs a thumb injury….and the thumb injury had just had surgery. So I’m not convinced that it was an actual “benching”

Plaschke: After being benched, Rams' Jared Goff plays through pain and doubt.

This is effectively my stance and we can agree to disagree, but if goff was healthy enough to be active and go in when wolford got hurt than i dont see the injury as being why he was sitting which means he was benched.

My recollection is that McVay announced Wolford as the starter for the Seattle game before he knew if Goff could play. He made the choice knowing that Goff might be available. At that point he was frustrated with Goff. Wolford gave a scrambling element that Goff doesn’t have. That was exciting to McVay and he wanted to run with it.

Was it a “Benching”? I think this scenario is gray area enough that you can land on either side.

Wolford was hurt scrambling almost immediately. I remember posting on the Ramsrule board before the game that he better not run head first like he was against AZ or his career will be short. Sure enough he did it in seattle and was out in the first quarter.

Hendon also ran head first in his first preseason game and went into concussion protocols. I think he learned his lesson faster than Wolford…

Yes, Goff was benched.
Yes, Stafford was also benched once.

Goff was not only benched, he was effectively fired.

Water under the bridge, though. We are in such a good place, I can’t help but look at the way things transpired and be glad.

It is a comeback for Goff. It’s an ascension to record-setting efficiency. When his career is over, the rams will merely be mentioned as the team that drafted him.

Brees was honored by the Saints a week ago. The Chargers have nothing to do with him and that honor. So it will be for the rams and Goff when he joins the Pride of the Lions here, alongside Barry and CJ.

Im happy we got Goff. Besides tbay game hes been playing like a mvp this year.

Goff is a very high end pocket passer that needs to play on the right kind of team, that is a team with a strong o-line, for him to best use those talents. He’s not the kind of guy that can just play for any team and he’s the best QB for that team. There are teams where guys who couldn’t run this Lions team anywhere near Goff’s level, would be better QBs than Goff on teams with a train-wreck for an o-line. So Goff is a man with limitations and luckily for him and us, he doesn’t really see those limitations on this team. He’s really a good QB to have because he’s the kind that can win with a team talented enough to win it all.
