The 2 5th round picks were used to “upgrade” the 4th round pick. St Brown was a 4th round pick. His round wasn’t used as the sacrificial lamb. The 5th round picks were.
So if you have that much trust in Brad, why not trust him when he makes a move like this?
And Brad STILL took 2 shots at the late rounds. He had a 5th round pick and a 7th round pick.
They gave up 3 picks, for 1 pick…that’s just what happened. James Houston and Rodrigo were both 6th round picks last year. James Mitchell was a 5th round pick last season and hes going to be a contributor this season. Call me crazy, but I would rather see Brad Holmes make 3 picks vs 1 all day if it’s a 3rd vs a 4th & 2 5ths.
At the end do the day, I love our draft so I’m not too worked up about it. For me, I don’t think it’s crazy to expect our 3rd round pick that we traded up for to be a contributor week 1
Well said. And one of the great late pick success stories in recent Lions history is James Houston. People need to wrap their brain around the fact that James Houston’s story will not happen going forward. It barely happened with the 2022 team. Even then he didn’t play a single snap until week 12 on a short week, and they only found 5 snaps for him.
James Houston was released and could have been signed by any of the the other 31 teams… so it didn’t even matter that the Lions drafted him in the 1st place.
And Rodrigo is another success story. We saw our coach BEGGING for ANYONE to step up and keep Rodrigo off the field. When the next Rodrigo comes around, he won’t see the field.
I agree to an extent, but you are overlooking injuries. We had like 20 guys on injured reserve last year at one point. This is why the 16 man practice squad is so important. Most of the practice squad guys were activated to the gameday roster at one point or another during the season.
Late round drafted guys often end up on practice squads. Houston and Jefferson are 2 examples of that from the last 2 drafts.
