The only thing the Lions didn't draft

Don’t forget Meeks! I think he might be a TE now too.

yep.. and there are still some vets that could be signed if needed.

Xavier Woods, Taylor Rapp, Donovan Wilson, Jabrill Peppers, and even Iffy Melifonwu are still unsigned from UFA.

I would guess the Lions want to stick with the younger guys, but there are options if needed.

Solid list and of available dudes

Yeah, Sam must be ready to go come September. And maybe I’m in the minority, but I really like Conklin as a #2. Not sure what happened last year with the Chargers, was he injured? The previous 4 years he was $$$. Hopefully we get that version of him.

And there is a large amount of FAs available, even more will be in August with cuts.

Who is going to replace Alex Anzalone?

Right. My grandson knows Seth McLaughlin, played in camps with him and against him when he was at Buford High in GA. He was a C and OT at the time, my grandson was DL for Milton High. Damn shame about his Achilles; sounded really bad when it hapenned.

He was fourth center in a very weak C class. He would have been 7th or 8th this year. And the Achilles. Fingers crossed for him, he’s a good dude.

Still. Wouldn’t you rather have Lew and Zion Young (if the Ravens would have even selected Moore) rather than Moore and someone like McLaughlin and/or Scruggs? And who knows if we even needed to trade up? We very well could have had Moore and Lew.

I wish Brad would stop trading up, its hurting our depth.

Not exactly sure. AA dropped in coverage a lot. UM fans, how is Moore in coverage?

First off that Lew + Zion Young is asked with the benefit of hindsight. No one thought Lew (or Hecht) would still be there, at least not on here.

Second, personally I had Moore ranked higher than Young. I wasn’t overly off vs. consensus on either of them, maybe a tad high on Moore and a touch low on Young, but in a vacuum give me Moore.

Third, I have MUCH higher hopes for McLaughlin than you do. But that’s fine, we’re all gonna disagree on evaluation, but I really do like him.

Fourth, I think overall we have some of the best depth in the league. We live in our own little bubble, rooting for a team that has had its depth tested the past two seasons to an inordinate level and only see places we could be theoretically stronger, but our depth is in fact VERY good. And there’s the flip side that at some point, you’re just drafting guys for other teams. @BubbaBaker60 and others were pretty adamant that we should be using our 4/5th round picks to move up for this very reason.

Fifth and finally, at this point you should know Brad is not going to stop trading up, it’s time to move on to the acceptance phase. And given the way things have gone for the Detroit Lions since he’s been here, I’m willing to accept it. And this is coming from a draft guy who always wants more picks!

We want a half decade of plus play out of Mayes. That’s the goal.

Same here. Post draft I’m still worried about of LB depth (to include starters).

Yes, he’s a blind spot for me, but not the team. Still, if SLP isn’t his old self…

I think he’ll be fine. The majority of guys are, and those are the reports you’re hearing. That said we’ve been incredibly unlucky in general and specifically with guys with back problems so who knows? But it’s got to break our way once.

If we’re dropping Moore into coverage 54% of the time then we have a serious problem with the scheme calls being made.

Doh!

Sorry, meant Rolder. Got my UM guys mixed up.

.

I mentioned vets in another post today, but left Jimmie Ward off my list.

I saw he didn’t play in 2025, so I wondered what his injury was last year. Never actually found out, because I saw he was placed on the Commissioner’s Exempt List for a domestic abuse issue.

That ended my search.

I think Zion Young’s character issues had him off the Lions’ board, or possibly in a “bucket” much below Moore.

Brad made a comment in his presser after day 1 about having a few guys in a bucket that they would target on day 2, and his trade up leads me to believe Moore was the only guy left.

No one? How can you even assess that? You’re saying no one on the board thought Lew or Hecht or Parker (who I also mentoned) would be there ten picks after 118. Mucho respect for what you do, but you’re off on this one. I’ll give you one firm counter-example: I did.

I’ve also heard from the board that many times, you can get G and C starters in the fourth and fifth rounds, I think you’ve even said it, but I won’t put words in your mouth.

OK, And alot of others had it the other way around. In any event, they were close. I’ll give you Moore in a vacuum, but that was not the question. It was Moore + zero vs. Young + Lew (worst case). Even Brad said that he was not sure the Ravens would take Moore (and I get the Minter connection), but they were probably going Edge, which they did.

It’s not that I don’t like him (even though this is one of the few times I’ve probably watched more tape on him than you; I’ve watched him since eighth grade, lol). I’d prefer Hecht or Lew or Parker to him. I’m rooting for him though.

Sure, but again that’s not the point. I think in cases like this, where it turns out we gave up Lew, and cases like Terrion where we gave up Beebe, it hurts our depth. In other words, our depth could be even better.

For Branch i loved it. For Terrion and Moore, not so much. Just calling it like i see it.

Nope. You be you, I’ll be me. Some people think Brad can do nothing wrong. I’ll call him out when i don’t like it. Not saying he’s bad. He’s very very good. I’ll take Brad as the whole package, as a top ten GM, maybe top 5. Lord knows he’s better than anything else we’ve ever had. But he could be better. He gets spooked when there’s a run on his position. We damn near traded up for Miller, which really would have hurt. Brad needs more gummies in the draft room!

Fair enough, but it WILL continue to happen. So keep yelling at the clouds I suppose. You be you.

But I really, firmly believe that Brad has a much better grasp of the draft order than anyone outside of the teams. I mean, we don’t have access to the medicals, the character stuff, the interviews, the GPS data, and all of our “boards” are built off simulators, which are built buy guys who get hit by purposeful MISinformation from the teams themselves. How is it possible everyone thinks we’re right and they’re wrong?

So I don’t think he got spooked when he traded up for Moore, I think he was right that the Ravens were about to take him. 100%. And he wanted him. You can disagree with him wanting him, that’s evaluation and I get it, but I think faulting the process is, well, faulty. Conviction is an important quality for a GM.

Very possible. Its also possible that he had more than one left and he over-compensated, as the Edge run stopped after Howell and no Edges went between 46 and 50.
We’ll never know for sure.

i do like Brad’s conviction.

I’m not faulting the process. Like I said, trade ups can be great. They have worked out for us in the past. And I give Brad his flowers, overall. Its just that I don’t think he’s flawless.

He was talked out of trading up for Alim (or was it Levi). I think it happenned again for Miller. To me, that’s a flaw. Yes, a minor one, that at the end of the day, I’ll take.

I agree that overall he has a good grasp of the draft overall, and of course access to way more info.
