The Perfect Fit for our OL

I made a post 2 years ago before the draft about the perfect fit for our Defensive Backfield, Brian Branch.

This year the post is for perfect fit for our OL room.

Donovan Jackson.

#1 rated Guard Prospect coming out of High School.
IMO #1 rated Guard Prospect coming out of College this year as well.

Started 40 games the last 3 years. Mr reliable.

Main position LEFT GUARD, where we have our biggest void.

Slid over to Left Tackle half way through the season, and Buckeye’s didn’t miss a beat for the Natty Title run.

6’4 315 , broad chest great wingspan. Good feet, not great feet yet.

Immediate starter Day 1 Left Guard.

Ability to slide over to Left Tackle in case of major injury to Decker.

Glasgow could then be the OL6 role.

LT- Decker — Manu

LG- Donovan Jackson ---- Kayode

C- Ragnow ---- Glasgow OL6

RG- Mahogs ---- Sorsdal

RT- Sewell ----- Skipper

Even though I am one of the most bullish on Glasgow at RG, and most hesitant on anointing Mahogs as a great one just yet.

I’ve been on the Sign Scherff train.

I’ve been saying let’s see what we can do developing our OL that we’ve selected already…

All that being said… you can’t deny that Donovan Jackson is an elite prospect and a perfect fit into our OL room.

For now and for the future. …Immediate plug n play starter.

Insurance against Manu, in case he fails to develop at LT.
Inusrance against failing to sign Scherff.
Mahogs vs Sorsdal for the future RG spot, even if we do sign Scherff
Glasgow in the elite OL6 role for us.

I still think someone above us will draft him as an OT.

Ive been trading down to the top of the 2nd in many simulations latey. Taking Donovan Jackson at pick 33-35 while picking up a 4th or a 4th and 5th. Then i maneuver to get 2 pass rushers like Femi and Sav’yion Jones. (I like the Egyptian kid from baylor later too).

Obviously if you love Jackson you dont trade down.

I agree with you here, have liked Jackson for us since he showed out at OT. That versatility makes him VERY enticing. But like @CuriousHusker said it makes him enticing for other teams too. I think he goes to Seattle at 18.

That’s an elite draft day strategy. If we can move down and grab him top of round 2…same place a guy like Avila went.

BOOM.

Plus, if he goes off the board, we can still have our pick at edge top of round 2 most likely.

The trade I’m looking at

#28 and our 4th rounder

to Bears for

#39 and #72.

So Bears can go draft Judkins RB. Or maybe a S/OL

I think he’s the type of player that unites the coaches and scouting staff in the right building. The coaches love the versatility bc they can feel good about utilizing it early and the scouting department loves having the built in plan B if the Plan A moonshot fails.

If the Bears trade up for Judkins I will laugh and laugh and laugh at them. I would be stunned if he went in the 1st of this class particularly.

Now if they trade up for Hampton or TreVeyon Henderson, I wouldn’t be laughing nearly as hard. One is an overall stud, and the other is the game-breaking type Ben will want.

I’m hoping Cleveland passes on QB early then flips us 33 and 94 to move up. Teams go crazy for QBs, though not necessarily for the 5th year option any more.

The biggest problem to me of any trade-up scenario is Minnesota. They only have 4 picks in the whole draft: 24, 97, 139 and 187. They for sure want to trade down to add more picks, and they’ll likely be much more willing to offer a team a bargain to do it. So I think we’ll need a 2nd team to want to move up. Just asking for 1 is asking a lot.

Which makes him an ideal fit in Seattle, who needs an immediate upgrade inside but has some real concerns with Lucas’s health at RT, but immediately and in the long-term. He offers so much cover for them.

Yeah I shoulda said Bears trade up for RB. Judkins was on my mind so I just typed his name.

But I definitely think Bears will want to go up and get that RB for Ben.

They need it.

I love the thought of going OL with our first pick, and Jackson would be awesome. I do have some hesitancy about the constant talk of trading out of the first round and losing that 5th year option. Any trade out of the first round had better reflect giving up that 5th year option with the compensation coming in return.

Most of the mocks have them taking Jeanty at 10. I REALLY don’t want that to happen. Hopefully the Raiders snatch him up at 6.

But I think in a class this deep, if they miss out on Jeanty they don’t need to trade up, unless they’re looking specifically for the sort of big play ability Henderson could bring. But they could also settle for Tuten later if that was the case.

@SirLion good point about 5th year option. Us draft feins do not take that into consideration when we are doing our mocks. We just want the more picks!

@Thats2 I think Bears could go that OL from Mizzou 1st, then RB at the end of round 1.

They could, for sure. Or Tyler Warren. Or one of the edges. There’s a bunch of ways they can go now after FA, but it’s not hard to imagine Ben coveting Jeanty for his offense.

Definitely a factor. For example LaPorta is a free agent in only 2 more seasons. Missed out on a 5th year option by 2 picks. Good for him though hits free agency sooner.

I like the move. It keeps our line strong into the future. It gives us depth. It keeps a vet like Glasgow fresh and healthy if he needs to step into the lineup. It also protects us if manu or sorsdal are busts. He also sounds like a potential player we could cross train at center as well.

I think he’d be a perfect fit! He’s a guy that’s really growing on me as we inch closer to the draft. I’d prefer addressing the DL in rd one, but would not be disappointed at all if he was the pick. Not sure he’s gonna be there though

An OG in the first round thats just crazy. I would rather just nickle and dime the O Line. Goff can get rid of it quick. We have so many great players to fill that OG spot. Muti, Sorsdal, Awosika, Eguakun, Niese, Skipper plus you can find elite all pro IOL in the 6th and 7th round every year. No need to worry because we can move Glasgow back to RG where he is the best OG in the NFL and all 5 starters will play all 17 games with no injuries.

Agree and I heard what you are saying.

But that being said , it doesn’t take away from the fact that he is a perfect fit for our OL .

And looking at this compared to DTs and our DT room, it probably makes more sense than going that route.

I think Jackson would be an excellent choice. For me it would be a toss up if both he and Zabel were available as to who would be the best fit. Either could step in and start from day 1 and be a big improvement over Glasgow. Zabel we can always move over to center in the future but I think either would be a great choice and a foundation piece that you have locked up pretty cheap for at least 5 years.

He’s probably my number one hope for pick 28, I honestly think he goes sooner.

Don’t we already have our starting LG via our 2024 6th round pick?

He looked really good between Decker and Rags vs Chicago.
