What do you mean by that?
I mean without a camera attached to the goalpost and pointing upward, what angle would tell them anything? From behind you can’t tell when it crossed the goalpost. From the side you can’t tell where the ball was when it crossed the goalpost. Maybe a top-down drone camera? But they don’t have anything like that yet.
Can’t they put a sensor in it like they did for the first down thing they are trying? Maybe i misunderstand that spot assist technology for first downs?
I think that’s based on cameras, not something in the ball.
And maybe? Not really sure how that technology works. I think it might use the cameras that are already there.
Honestly, for how infrequently it would be needed, I don’t really fault the league for not spending a bunch of money on it. Sure, they could afford it, but I also suspect the refs get it right 99.9% of the time. I think they probably got it right last night.

aren’t the refs supposed to be standing directly underneath each goalpost? It’d be crazy calling it good if he saw that it wasn’t. I mean what is the rule for that? directly over is good? it wouldn’t be if it hit the goalpost. if it’s slightly toward center going over the top then it’s ‘good’ since it could ‘doink’ in?
They are, yeah, that’s why I think they probably got it right. Nobody in the stadium has a better angle. Acting like we can tell better based on TV angles is nonsense imo. They stand directly beneath the uprights and just to the outside of the goalpost. If they look up and see any part of the ball, it’s no good. It’s a fairly easy call for them, though obviously sometimes the ball is gonna pass really closely over the post.

on the broadcast… the rules guy said ALL of the ball needs to pass over the outside of the goalpost.

You have no idea where the ball is in that photo. Nobody does. It could be 5-10 yards behind the goalpost. In fact I expect it is.

Exactly, while watching I was like “he missed!?” Then I was like well actually I didn’t have the angle that showed when the ball would have broke the plane, I’m pretty sure they probably didn’t get that wrong. Way better angle on the ball than we did
Finally, someone who gets it. I thought he might have missed it too watching live, but when they called it good I knew I was wrong. I did not immediately jump to “oh they got it wrong.”
They could make it even more interesting and put a cross bar on the top
