The Safety position

I think Beckett is the sleeper SS option. He probably won’t start because he’s a tad bit of a project. He played MLB in college but is way undersized for LB. Every depth chart has him listed as a LB for us but I think we’re looking at him as a SS. He’s a solid all around player but he will need to transition to SS.

Rumors I’ve heard is that he’s looked better than Harris has in camp so far.

They moved him to SS because they signed Harmon and Harmon was a better ball hawk and better in coverage.

Walker is an above average tackler so they thought he could fill the SS role but he struggled badly in that role.

He’s much better suited to play FS or two man and I expect us to play a lot of two man. I think he will look better in that role but I am not convinced he’s a future starter. His coverage game really needs to improve. I’m hoping the new staff can bring him a long but this is a prove it year for him.

I agree he has shot as SS in box but more specialist than regular an ST…I have not heard anything about him being better than Harris … an doubt right now he is…I think Amos could make it as S an ST an even returner …he returned in college

That profile at safety? No thanks

In fairness those size grades are against LBers. He’s small for a LBer but not for a safety.

In comparison to pro bowl safety Q. Diggs.

Q. Diggs is 5’9 198 lbs
Beckett is 5’10 211 lbs

Diggs ran a 4.56 at 17.94 mph
Becket ran a 4.78 at 17.12 mph

on the other hand… his shuttle and 3 cone resemble decent times for a DE.

The struggle is real. He’s an enigma.

Not sure where you got the MPH readings from. Those seem disconnected from the dirty times though that can happen of course. The idea of a 4.8 safety terrifies me.

If he makes it an i doubt it will be ST an special downs as more a box Safety to cover say a TE or help hold edge. He would be special spot certain down player. I doubt he makes it but he is fast to ball an hits .

it will sort out during camp when he goes against equal talent.

With this staff IMO if he makes it he will have earned it as a UDFA

He will have to been out Amos I think for that special down player.
Amos is faster played S in college can return an is a hitter. Oh an he returns kicks. 6-1 188 He will make it as ST player if he makes it I feel same with Beckett

He did not participate at the combine and they are his pro day numbers.

Both players MPH numbers I got from here.

If he plays more like a 4.6 guy then I can see it I guess. I didn’t watch much of Marshall football so ai should’ve probably just stayed quiet.

He was Defensive player of the year in his conference. That drew my attention to him. So I went out and watched some film on the guy. He’s plays fast and with a ton of range. He was pretty good in coverage and great in run support. But when you come from a smaller conference you wonder if it can translate to the NFL.

Here are the last 5 defensive players of the year from his conference.

2020 - Tavante Beckett - He had 218 tackles, 4.5 sacks and a pick over the last two seasons.

2019 - DeAngelo Malone - still in school.

2018 - Jaylon Ferguson - drafted round 3 by Ravens

2017 - Marcus Davenport - picked 14OA by the Saints.

2018 - Trey Hendrickson - Drafted round 3 by the Saints.

He’s in pretty good company and I believe the only reason he wasn’t drafted was he’s too small for a LBer. He’s going to convert to safety, NB or be a ST ace. And he’s known for his quality special teams play.

I think he has a real chance to make the team but I don’t expect him to start at SS for us. Most like a ST player and backup SS this year.

“They” were complete and utter morons. So there’s that. Harris wouldn’t even make many an NFL roster at either Safety spot.

Possibly, but after KVN being traded for peanuts only to become a significant factor on a Super Bowl champion and later signing a $51M contract, I can’t be that sure. Holmes and Campbell will look at him with new eyes, knowing that they would save $880K against the cap by cutting him. I’d think he has at least special teams value.

True on KVB but the problem there was that they wanted him to be a coverbacker and he was a 3-4 OLB. Harris IMHO would be ok as an in the box SS. But we are moving to a two high system and I think he will be terrible at that.
