I think you mean the USA?
This game isn’t great! Hopefully Canada start being a little less cautious.
Oh Canada!

Whew.
I was starting have to flashbacks of the gold medal hockey game. Dominate only to lose in extra time.
Good win Canada. Take another dive South Africa on your way out the door. Davies had an impact despite not being 100 percent. Hopefully he gets more minutes next game. Tough opponent next.
He looked great before he got tired
Yep. I had wondered why they didn’t bring him on a little bit sooner. Then I saw that.
Looks like Canada will play the winner of Morocco vs. Netherlands.
That’s should be the end of their journey, barring a crazy upset.
A top 16 finish in futbol is really terrific for Canada, though. They’ve come a long way.
Netherlands is +110
Monaco and Canada are both +250 for QF.
Go Colombia

Uh, por que Colombia?
USA and The Netherlands for me
Idk if i should make a new topic because idk how many people care.
But Im a Soccer casual. Ive tried to really get behind it i just never REALLY can. But its summer, Tigers suck, and the other 3 teams aren’t doing crap this off season.
But one thing that drives me INSANE about soccer, its not the flopping (happens in all sports) its not the timing, (because whatever) its the damn offsides system.
I see purists defending the sport saying “well one toe over the line in other sports…” yea because its A LINE! (Other than football where its obvious and you have a physical ball dividing the zones) every other sport has clear and obvious lines on the field of play. Its not moving, arbitrary. So its even more maddening that you have people sometimes sprinting 22+mph, and you have a system calling offsides because a big toe is over. Im sorry thats wrong.
What if they had a system similar to the NHL.
Blue line halfway between the centre spot and penalty spot.
Then you have the 2 neutral zones, 2 attacking zones, 2 penalty areas, and 2 goal areas.
So offensively, one the opposite zones matter. So up to midfield is free game. After that, an offensive player cannot cross into the next zone unless they have the ball OR theres a defender (excluding goalie OR furthest back defender) in the zone.
I think that would be very fair. It wouldn’t break the game too much or change too much.
Im just tired of seeing defenders realize they have been beat, and purposely run the opposite direction JUST enough to get an attacker one toe offsides. Like what a stupid rule.
Also side note. I think the metrics system is better for everything (aside from Celsius). But if its soooo much better, why does FIFA officially use yards not meters. Sure they label it meters. But 9.15 meters? Why the weird arbitrary decimal? Oooo its 10.0 yards. Haha.
Well, the game was invented in England that’s why yards. But I agree, the metric system is superior to the mishmash of other measures. I also prefer fahrenheit as it is a bit more precise than celsius because the degrees are smaller. But growing up in Canada, we always used both systems interchangeably in conversations, while commercial and govt measures were always strictly metric.
Well it’s the most popular sport in the world pretty comfortably, so clearly they’re doing something right. And frankly all of the Americans complaining about offsides is galvanizing them to keep things the way they are. Could you imagine what we’d think if some European casuals started complaining about NFL rules after a month of watching it?
Look up ‘soccer casual” on you tube
True. But its not like its a thing only casuals complain about. Purist do complain about how ticky tacky off sides is. Especially since the AI reviews came out a few years ago.
Its just an idea of something to make it less ticky tack.
To me in all sports reviews should be clear and obvious. Especially on things like Off sides.
If you have to go frame by frame, using AI and computer models on something thats moving. Call on the field stands. because theres virtually no competitive advantage.
Vs something like a strike zone, or breaking the goal line, or 3 pointer. Something thats fixed in place. A known thing. Thats fine to go frame by frame.
i hate it in hockey. Off sides review for something that happened 2 minutes before the goal. And the player was 1 pixel over.
Im sorry, that had no competitive advantage.
Like every game, there are issues at the margins that could be better handled. I agree on flopping, it would be so easy to fix the worst cases, but they refuse. At least the WC has done away with much of the writhing and time-killing by introducing that rule that if the trainers come out, you basically get sent to the penalty box for a little bit. Guys are springing back up like they’d never do during the league season.
But the lack of scoring incentivizes it more in soccer than any other sport, guys will always try and trick the refs. Basketball earning one ‘goal’ isn’t nearly as much of a reward, so I think it should be easier to eradicate. And yet it persists.
I don’t agree on offsides, but then I’ve been a fan of the game for a long time and am quite used to it. I DO think the introduction of VAR has made these edge cases more controversial, but the same is true in the NFL with what is or isn’t a catch, what is or isn’t PI, etc… Offsides used to be more like ‘tie goes to the runner’ and that was that.
At the very least limbs didn’t used to matter, it was more about torso/center of gravity, which I thought was far better, but the introduction of cameras actually hurt that aspect of things because that was a gray area, whereas the position of the limbs was now much easier to see. So they shifted the rule to focus on that, and to me that’s why it’s all gone downhill.
But I have no problem with the rule overall, it introduces a lot of cool strategy to the game. For instance there are some coaches who play a risky ‘high line’ style and try and consistently pull-off the ‘offsides trap’. It takes insane coordination amongst the back four, because if one guy doesn’t see things the same way as the rest, you’ve got a free runner in behind with ‘acres’ of space to operate. In a game with so little scoring, one mistake can be the difference between winning and losing. It’s intense, or at least it is to me.
For most Europeans baseball is more boring than washing clothes. 2000 games and most time nothing happend on the field.
