Thoughts on Fedorov finally getting his jersey retirement?

If you haven’t seen the videos they posted on Twitter, I highly recommend them. Very good stuff from the social media team.

Sergei was and is my all time favorite Wings forward, and is a large part of what got me into hockey, both watching and playing. Dude was absolutely mesmerizing.

I know the family feud was sort of understandable from Illitch’s standpoint, but to me, it became pretty stupid pretty quickly.

I’m really curious as to what lead up to the relationship thawing out here. Though if I had to guess any motive behind something Chris Illitch does, its probably got to be money. And maybe even to generate some hype on the 100th season, which I don’t feel too many are excited for.

What do you guys think?

I have a Federov jersey. So happy they’re finally retiring it.

Should have been done years ago.

But now its just a money grab.

The “5 game ceremony.” 3/4 leading up to the final retirement are mid week.

The last game is Monday Night mid January.

All that just screams “lets try to market a sell out”

And any reason to hype up this 100 years thing,

Dont pay attention that this team has been absolutely dog water for 10 seasons now. With no effort to get any better.

Look we’re finally doing the thing we should have done 20 years ago,

Just horrible all around.

Does Fedorov have to pay for his own flights and lodging?

Chris is rumored to be a disciple of the Bengals organizational philosophies

Glad to see it. He definitely deserves it. He was part of the group that got me addicted to the Red Wings and Hockey overall. Current Red Wings are really testing that addiction though. But Federov, F’ yeah. Completely support it. LFG 91

I say congrats to the man !

Not a Wings fan but this is like 20 years overdue. Unfortunately “feelings” and stubbornness got in the way but better late than never.

LONG OVERDUE.

regrettable he didn’t finish in Detroit, but the guy is one of the best to ever put on the skates.

I think everyone has it right. My favorite player was Steve Yzerman, but it really said a lot to me that Yzerman would be quick to tell anyone that Fedorov was a better player than he was. Gretzky even talked about how good Fedorov was. There isn’t much higher praise than that. Fedorov definitely deserves to have his jersey raised.

I understand why there were some hurt feelings on Mike Illitch’s side, Sergei certainly burned some bridges on the way out. However, this dragged out way too long. I 100% agree this is only being done now due to money and to generate positive press for a team going nowhere fast.

I disagree… They’re steadily trending upwards, the farm system has been rebuilt… FA signings have been lackluster though

They’ve gotten some solid draft picks that show promise, but everyone’s draft picks initially show promise. Let’s see how many actually make the NHL. The biggest thing for me is they are intentionally ignoring things that could make them better that aren’t even that hard. Their team defense is what is killing them, and they just refuse to address it. Instead, they sign bottom fringe free agents, try to talk them up and the same issues crop up every March.

Sad thing is, we are becoming like the Cowboys. Start the season hot when most teams are still ramping up. “This is our year!” Start slowing down midseason as everyone catches up. Then when things hit full peak intensity in March we get “We won’t make the same mistakes again!”, then make the same mistakes again.

The fact it’s the same things that keep happening, shows either they have no idea what the problem is so they can’t learn from it, or that they know what the problem is and just refuse to correct them, because it requires investment. I think it’s the latter, and they pitch the “just wait for our draft picks” to kick the can down the road some more.

I agree about defense, it’s the elaphant in the room. Holl will hopefully be in GR… Pellikka should break the lineup sooner than later and hopefully Bernard-Docker can stay healthy. Edvinsson/Seider has potential to be a top pairing in the league, looking forward to those 2 playing together for a long time.

Which FA defenseman has hit the market and wants to be here? There’s a reason Steve has to keep overpaying older, mediocre talent. Or guys who want to come back home and play.

This is just like the Lions 4 years ago. Unfortunately in hockey, you might get 1 player in the NHL from a draft class 4 years later unlike the NFL draft here you might get 4 guys in one draft class that are good the first year.

Very similar strategies, one just moves 4-5x as fast.
