Yeah, sounds like something Boras would figure out to me. Say what you will about how he does business, he gets it done for his clients.
He and Clark were both invited to spring training. I would be surprised if McGonigle didnât make the big club on opening day. Clark I expect later in the season.
My guess if he has a good spring he will be the starter with Baez play cf. But Zack can play SS as well. And Matt Vierling returning as well. Probably isnt the starter, but he will play
Baez and Dingler were the only plus fielders for Detroit last year. Baez should probably play SS most of the time because thatâs a more premium position than CF. Meadows and Baez are close in CF. Nobody is close to Baez at SS. Seems like a no brainer to me.
McGonigle will be the starting SS.
I thought I heard he wasnât that good of a fielder though?
Hes an average fielder.
If not SS where do you put him?
I feel like an Aaron Glenn joke could go here. I donât watch minors, so canât offer any advice here.
From what I have read he goes to 2B, but now they resigned Torres with the qualifying offer (something like $22M) I have no idea
I personally think McGonigle starts at short with Baez becoming more of a utility player at SS, center, and 3rd base.
You will probably see Baez as a defensive replacement late in games also.
His arm probably better suits him at 2nd. I think thatâs a reasonable place for him after Gaybear leaves.
HoweverâŚ
McGonigle has been working really hard on his defense so maybe we should wait and see how he looks this year at SS.
Weâre kind of a clown show defensively already. Itâs kind of painful for me. I guess it doesnât bother other people.

Gay bear you say
Freudian slip there Bols?
So you think McGonigle at SS is clown show?
He isnât a bad defender. Heâs graded as a 50 in fielding and arm strength. Meaning he will make most of the plays that he should but probably wonât make the spectacular plays. Meat and potatoes.
btwâŚnothing bothers me worse than bad defense.
Lol. It wasnât a slip up.
Whenâs opening day. If they have a couple young guys on the roster, could be a very exciting season
McGonigle at SS until Rainer is ready. Then he probably shifts to 2nd. But what about Keith? Whereâs his long term use? 3rd base?
I think you will see Kieth at 3rd, and 1st mostly. Maybe some 2nd base too.
He helps give Hinch that flexibility in his lineups.
Ya know I see quite a few posts of, yeah but the offense. The tigers did nothing for the offense. Like every sport, Detroit just isnât most peopleâs preferred destination. So sometimes weâd, smartly, rather not overpay just to get someone here. Plus letâs not forget that we have like 2 non pitchers that are even 30. Carp isnât even 29, Tork 27 Greene 26 ish. Our old guys arenât even 30 for our position players. Yeah thereâs no Griffey, A Rod, or trout, but really how many of those guys are there. We have a great young nucleus so how bout we see where it goes instead of overpaying or trading those guys away for 1 or 2yrs of winning.
Holy Shit

This is some huge news from @DavidPurdum: Prosecutors are alleging the scope of Emmanuel Claseâs scheme in which he intentionally threw pitches for balls is far greater than originally thought. Forty-eight games is a staggering number. Story free at ESPN: espn.com/mlb/story/_/idâŚ
