# Tigers’ fast infusion of Gen Z ballers is exciting, bittersweet: Analysis
full article at link.

This infusion of young, high-end talent has been a heartening part of this otherwise insane, mostly disappointing season to this point. But it wasn’t supposed to be about peddling the future this year. This wasn’t supposed to be another transition year. This was supposed to be the year the assembled talent, young and old, coalesced and formed a legitimate World Series contender.

Instead, it was injury and underperformance. It was blown saves (28), blown leads (19 when leading in the seventh inning or later). It was trading away of foundation pieces (Skubal, Mize, Rogers).

That the Tigers have gallantly stayed in the fight, even after the disastrous month of May and the trades, is remarkable. It’s validation of these players’ character and talent and it’s a credit to Hinch and the coaching staff for keeping them galvanized and on task.

But it feels a little bittersweet. It’s been a three-year build toward what looked like a real postseason run. To expect that out of this young team, with Greene. Carpenter, Vierling and Flaherty still out, isn’t realistic.

So, in a sense, we’re back to 2023, wondering how good this team can be when the young guys fully mature. Wondering how and when prospects like Bryce Rainer, Josue Briceño, Zyhir Hope and River Ryan will fit in. Wondering what the future holds for the likes of Vierling and Meadows and others.

The Tigers are sinking or swimming with a hungry band of Gen Z ballers.

McGonigle just turned 22. Max Clark is 21 and has played 18 games in the big leagues. Brett Callahan is 24 with four games under his belt. Hao-Yu Lee has played a half a season (82 games) but he’s 23.

On down the roster: Ben Malgeri, 31 games, age 26. Eduardo Valencia, 21 games, 26 years old. Melton, 25, is at the top of the Tigers rotation now just 18 starts into his career. Jackson Jobe, 24, 13 total starts, three since Tommy John surgery. Drew Sommers, 26, like Clark and Callahan, played in the Spring Breakout showcase this spring.

President Scott Harris has said for two years that a second wave of young talent was coming. But it wasn’t supposed to happen this soon, certainly not en masse like this. But life comes at you fast, right?

But what to make of it?

On the positive side, it’s been a fun infusion of energy and athleticism. It’s a credit to the Tigers’ talent procurers and developers. McGonigle and Clark have come as advertised. Lee and Valencia have outperformed whatever prospect status they came into the league with. Same for Malgeri.

Also, I’m not sure if those rumors about us being interested in Ketel Marte last winter were true or not, but he’s making it seem like he wants to get traded on social media.

Seems like a massive turd. His teammates and the team he currently gets paid by are 1 game out of a playoff spot and he is busy on social media and ignoring his teammates.

Maybe I’m missing something. But alarm bells going off.

Its like this team just cant keep itself motivated or something.

Win% against the bottom 6 teams in baseball. 62% (well above average)

Win% against the top 6 67% (how???- leads AL)

Win% against the middle 17? Under 42% virtually worst in AL

Its like in BIG games they can play up. They blow out the bad teams. But in regular day to day games? They bleep the bed

That Baltimore game was the death of the year

Call me crazy…but I think the Tigers still make the playoffs Marty.

Mostly cause the American league is so pathetic. But .500 baseball might get you in

I’m just hoping either my Jays or Tigers get in. If they both miss, well I won’t watch any playoff ball and that’s okay

The good news is that it should be obvious to Tigers management where we need to dedicate our financial resources in the off-season.

The bad news is: it might not be obvious to them.

Tiger hitters are doing a lot of swinging at the first strike they see tonight.

This team seems like the Dog Days of August are creeping in. Like they’d rather be home taking a nap.
