Tigers vs Braves; Sept 19-21

Here come the surging Braves

Braves at Tigers

Series: Three games at Comerica Park

First pitch: Friday – 6:40 p.m.; Saturday – 1:10 p.m.; Sunday – 1:40 p.m.

TV/radio: Friday-Sunday – FanDuel Sports/97.1

Probables: Friday – RHP Bryce Elder (7-10, 5.56) vs. RHP Charlie Morton (9-10, 5.56); Saturday – LHP Joey Wentz (5-6, 5.56) vs. RHP Keider Montero (5-3, 4.32); Sunday – RHP Spencer Strider (6-13, 4.64) vs. Casey Mize (14-5, 3.88).

Elder, Braves: After four straight quality starts, he stumbled last time out against Houston (10 hits, six runs in 4.1 innings). He’s a sinker-slider pitcher, primarily, throwing more four-seamers and changeups to lefties. He’s been unable to control right-handed hitters: .307/.356/.507. The slider has been especially ineffective against them (.504 slug). When he’s right, though, he gets a lot of ground balls (50%).

Morton, Tigers: The stat line continues to be unkind to him, mostly because his command has been erratic. But in his last start, he regained the feel for his four-seam fastball, and that’s a big step forward. When he can pair his four-seam and sinker, it enhances his already lethal curveball. Despite all the ups and downs this season, his curveball is still limiting hitters to a .219 average with a 37.7 whiff rate.

# It’s way past time to panic over Detroit Tigers. Yet the AL Central math still favors them

===

Just as they promised they weren’t panicking Thursday, Sept. 18, at Comerica Park when the Cleveland Guardians finished off a sweep, knocked out their ace – Tarik Skubal (gulp!) – in a 3-1 torture session and skipped town with all the momentum in the Central Division race.

Maybe they aren’t.

But everyone else is, and for good reason: A complete collapse in the American League Central is now in play, and it’s getting harder by the minute to see a way to avoid it.

And yet, there is one. So, take a breath … if you can. Oxygen remains, and it is long past time to inhale a big ol’ cannister of it.

Just make sure to exhale. Slowly. While considering: Math.

It’s still on the Tigers’ side, even if pitching and hitting and defense don’t seem to be. Yes, they are in trouble. Big trouble. Doo-doo trouble. And, yes, the annoying Guardians are coming.

Again.

===
Nobody likes to think about a collapse. It’s out there, though, and beginning to feel a bit inevitable.
The Tigers have lost six of seven and 15 of 22 since Aug. 23, when they held an 11½-game lead in the Central. That wasn’t even over the Guardians, who were 12½ back that day.

==

Also: math. It’s not as bad as it seems. For one, they don’t need a big winning streak. They just need a win … and then three more.

Think of it this way: if the Tigers can take two of three against the Braves – surging now but also suffering through a subpar season – and Cleveland takes three of four from the Twins, the Guardians will only gain half a game. Which means the Tigers would travel to Cleveland for their three-game series next week leading by three games.

===
The Guardians are streaking. They’ve won seven in a row and 12 of 13. Talk about late-season magic, eh?

The Tigers can relate – they were piling up wins down the stretch a year ago.

If you’re looking for hope, consider that the Tigers lost 12 of 13 through mid-July and then found their way out of it, with a run in which they went 18-7. They can do it again.

==

Win just one of those – and Tarik Skubal is set to start again Wednesday – and they travel to Boston for the final three games with a two-game lead over Cleveland. Win one in Boston – again, not guaranteed considering the state of recent play, but far from impossible – and the Tigers would force the Guardians to sweep the playoff-chasing Texas Rangers in their last series.

If Cleveland doesn’t, the Tigers win the Central.

All they have to do is win four games: two against Atlanta, one against Cleveland, and one against Boston. That would force Cleveland to win eight of its last 10, which also means winning 20 of its last 23 – remember, they’ve already won 12 of 13.

If the Guardians slow down even a little – say, winning just seven of their final 10, the Tigers win the Central as long as they finish 4-5. That’s not even .500 baseball. But it is better baseball than they’ve been playing.
So, can they settle down and find a few moments this weekend to win the series against Atlanta? To get the critical hit? To make the essential pitch? Sure they can; they’ve done just that many times this season.

Do that, and the story begins to change – in a hurry. The math is out there, and it’s still favorable.

The Tigers just have to find a way to take it … and breathe. And so do you.

AJ Hinch has been leaning hard on him down the stretch. Dingler started behind the plate Thursday for the fifth straight game and the eighth in the last nine.

“A couple of things are in play with him,” Hinch said before the game Thursday. “It’s hard to take him out of the lineup in general, for one. We know where we are in the schedule.”

Dingler, 27, played his 119th game Thursday, far exceeding his career-high in either the minors or majors. But if he’s feeling worn down at all, he’s hiding it well. Over the last 13 games, along with his stellar work behind the plate, he’s slashed .320/.358/.420.
But there is a strategic reason Hinch started Dingler Thursday, despite it being a day game after a long, three hour, 15-minute game Wednesday night.

“We are facing these guys (the Guardians) in five days,” Hinch said. “Gavin Williams and Tanner Bibee are going to pitch in Cleveland, too. So our hitters get to see guys in back-to-back games.”

If the Guardians stay on their current pitching schedule, the Tigers will face Williams and Bibee (who started on Thursday) again on Tuesday and Wednesday at Progressive Field. So this is a rare occurrence where Hinch deployed the same lineup two games in a row.

“I wanted to give a similar lineup both days to see their pitchers both days,” he said. “In doing that, it’s the day game after a night game, it’s a pennant race, it’s late September, but I will react accordingly.”

Hinch said Jake Rogers will start behind the plate either Friday or Saturday against the Braves.

Hmmmm… that math favors the Tigers? Where have I heard that before?

Bryce Elder is the worst pitcher on planet Earth.

MUST win.

Also, we need Houston to take two of three over Seattle this weekend. Not sweep.

We have the tiebreaker over Houston, but we need these two to beat each other up.

Just realized that former Tiger Joey Wentz is pitching in this series.

He also blows.

The opposing pitching is going to allow us to win two of three if we choose to do so.

Plus, the Braves could easily be eliminated after today. Who knows what that’s going to do to their morale as a team.

You are forgetting, which is somewhat surprising with your post history, the Tiger bats make avg pitchers look like Cy Young type pitchers.

I can only hope they bail on the season…

The math says this shouldn’t be a problem. Like at all.

The play on the field says otherwise.

That’s what’s so frustrating.

Tigers need all 3.

Need the twins to take at least 2

I honestly dont think they can afford to lose another series

Death, Taxes, and Trey Sweeney.

As bad as the loss was, series sweep by Cleveland was, Keith going out with lower back stiffness yesterday is signifcant with only 9 games left.

Jace Jung mentioned as one candidate to come up if Keith goes to the DL which also means…Sweeney stays…sigh

I do wonder if Max Anderson would be a candidate to come up, he has played at third in Erie and Toledo

Have you looked at his numbers in Toledo this year?

Yes, but I have also seen his numbers in Detroit this season.

That’s a pretty bad pitcher set Atlantis throwing out there I feel pretty good about this series

As much as I agree with you on Atlanta’s pitcher, it mirrors how I feel about this Detroit offense right now. Granted Cleveland’s pitching is good.

well, no Sweeney so we have one positive before the game’s first pitch.

I also realized I won’t be able to watch these games as Youtubetv doesn’t have Foxsports south…to the bar we go…
