Scouting report
Hurter, Tigers: He may not start the game. Manager AJ Hinch has not disclosed how he wants to get Hurter into his second big-league game. If he doesn’t make the traditional start, he is expected to pitch bulk innings. He was limited to one time through the order in his big-league debut Sunday, but is stretched out to go five or six.
Ray, Giants: This will be the one-time Tiger’s fourth start since coming back from Tommy John surgery. He’s not pitched more than five innings in his previous three starts. The velocity on his four-seamer is back up to 94-95 mph, and he’s gotten a lot of swing-and-miss (38.6%) in his early starts. Hitters are 1 for 9 against his slider. The home run ball has vexed him. He’s allowed five in 9.1 innings in his last two starts (three to the Reds in Cincinnati).
