SCOUTING REPORT
Flaherty, Tigers: He is coming off a promising start. In his six innings against the Athletics, he mixed all five of his pitches, seemed to be moving down the mound more fluidly, his four-seam was sitting at 93 mph and touching 96, and he was smartly locating it around the zone. He got 11 whiffs on 15 swings with his knuckle-curve, but the effectiveness of that pitch was enhanced because hitters had to honor a much-improved slider, a pitch that had been eluding him in recent starts.
Williams, Nationals: He’s a soft-tossing craftsman who can mess up a hitter’s timing, not only for the night, but for a while. He throws 76-mph sweepers and 80-mph changeups off 88-89 mph four-seamers, with the occasional slider and sinker mixed in. He didn’t finish six innings in any of his five starts in June and is coming off a loss against the Padres (four runs, seven hits in five innings).
Williams had it for 12ish starts last year, 2.25 era, got hurt and cant find it. He never had it before that run, so I would expect strong run support in games 1 and 3. Irvin is JAG. Gore? He took awhile to cook, but he is fully loaded for bear now.
Good news is their hitting went in the tank a month ago, except James Wood. That guy is Dave Winfield w/o the plus arm.
