Tigers vs Red Sox; April 17-20

Pitching has been good for the Tigers.

Keith must of got caught banging one of Hinch’s chickens. It’s the only thing that makes sense.

A couple observations:

  1. Tigers only struck out 6 times. That’s positive
  2. Great pitching today
  3. Not gonna bang on Lee today but history in the minors indicates that he may be another AAAA player. Hit at all levels before AAA, then only .239 at AAA.
  4. Still excited to see Max Anderson when he comes back from injury. Hitting .272 at AAA so far.

I somehow missed, or tbh forgot, he was injured, don’t see what the injury was.

From the News and another thing I didn’t realize in the way too small sample size but yet concerning…..

One thing I didn’t

As good as the Tigers have been at home (8-1), they’ve been just about as bad on the road (2-9). After winning the first two games of the season in San Diego, Detroit now has lost nine straight away from Comerica Park, the Tigers’ longest road losing streak since they lost 10 road games in a row in 2010.

They’ve actually and amazingly gone 56 innings without a lead in a road game — including the squandered ghost runner in the 10th inning of their first extra-inning game of the season Friday night. The lead-less drought goes back to the eighth inning of the second game of the series against the Diamondbacks on March 31.

Of course, the Tigers have played worse games than Friday’s, when Red Sox lefty starter Ranger Suarez was near-perfect (as, of course, was his Tigers counterpart, Casey Mize).

But on a night when Riley Greene (first time not starting in 2026; he just missed a homer pinch-hitting in the 10th), Kerry Carpenter and Colt Keith were on the bench to start the game, working a few more at-bats could’ve possibly helped Detroit to get into that Boston bullpen (and some right-handers) earlier.

Suarez went eight innings, allowing just two hits, both in the first inning — and one of those was by Jahmai Jones, who was cut down trying to stretch a Green Wall ball into a double.

Man, he threw a couple of darts yesterday. Easily the best catcher we’ve had since Pudge.

Dinger threw 2 guys out but both were dropped. Him and McG have been great this year. Pay that man.

I wasn’t quite sure if Ho Lee Shit would’ve got that tag down at third in time. I didn’t see any good replays, but I wasn’t super focused in on the TV either.

That was a tag Javy could make in his sleep. So I score it a miss.

Not having Greene, Carp, and Keith in the lineup was kind of dildos in hindsight

Ok. I’ll take your word for it. But didn’t Javier blow a throw at second just the other day?

Throw accuracy is the weakest part of Javys defensive game. He is an all-time great at tagging. But that play only required average ability.

Sorry, the picture is a little bit blurry (YouTube). But even assuming Lee has the ball in his glove, it looks to me as if the runner was to third base before any tag would’ve been applied. It’s at least open for discussion. I don’t think it’s a forgone conclusion.

The ball beat the runner by about a foot as I recall. And the placement was excellent. It should have been an out imo. Dingler is pretty amazing. That arm is a cannon.

If you watch Javy, he doesn’t catch the ball and then make the tag. He’s already started his tagging motion before the ball is in his glove. Thats next level and I don’t believe was required here.

I like Lee as a prospect. I think he has the ceiling of a good rotation player. I think he needs more seasoning though. Meanwhile Clark went 4 for 5 with a homerun last night. Bring Clark up to play center and let McG and Javy handle SS and 3rd base.

This is from the USA today a couple days ago before Clark’s 4 for 5 day. To me it is all the proof needed to call him up. He is ready.

You want to talk elite strikeout rates, and the notion that a prospect needs a better challenge than AAA pitching can offer?

Clark has struck out just five times in 66 plate appearances, a 7.5% K rate that would rank fifth among qualified big leaguers. Oh, he’s also posted a .962 OPS at Toledo, off to a .356 (21-for-59) start that includes nine extra-base hits and six steals in as many attempts.

The ball did beat the runner to the base, but it wasn’t an excellent throw. It was an OK throw. If that ball is put on the inside part of third base it’s probably an out… Assuming that Lee catches it. Can Lee swipe faster than the runner can slide is the question. Because they look about equidistance.

This looks like a very tasty matchup.
