Tigers vs Reds April 24-26 (Includes Gibby day celebration today)

On deck: Cincinnati Reds

Series: Three games at Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati

First pitch: Friday — 6:40 p.m.; Saturday — 7:15 p.m.; Sunday — 1:40 p.m.

TV/radio: Friday — Detroit Sports Net/97.1 FM; Saturday — Fox/97.1 FM; Sunday — Detroit Sports Net/97.1 FM.

Probables: Friday — LHP Framber Valdez (2-1, 3.30) vs. LHP Andrew Abbott (0-2, 5.84); Saturday — RHP Jack Flaherty (0-1, 3.47) vs. RHP Brady Singer (1-1, 5.32); Sunday — RHP Keider Montero (1-2, 3.68) vs. RHP Rhett Lowder (3-1, 3.10).

Scouting report

Valdez, Tigers: Four of his five starts have been quality starts and his last two have been superior, limiting the Royals and Red Sox each to a run covering 13 innings total. One statistical abnormality, though. His ground-ball rate, still elite at 54.6%, is down 5% from last year. His fly ball rate, consequently, is at a career-high 19.6%. Could be just an early season anomaly. He’s still getting mostly weak contact (41% hard-hit rate).

Abbott, Reds: His recent outings have been messy, as his 1.743 WHIP would indicate. He hasn’t gone beyond five innings in his last two starts. He leans hard on his 92 mph four-seam fastball, throwing it 50% of the time. That could be because his changeup (.360 opponent average) and sweeper (.385) have been getting hit. When he’s right, though, he misses a lot of bats with those tw

Oh yeah, this is on today.

Now that the Pistons are in the playoffs again I’m finally realizing how crazy of a time in sports this is.

Spencer Torkelson’s walk-off blast lifts Detroit Tigers over Milwaukee Brewers

It’s just Torkelson’s second home run of the season — his first came Wednesday — and helped salvage an afternoon where ace Tarik Skubal had a strong-but-not dominant outing and the Tigers offense wasn’t going gangbusters. The Tigers got a first inning home run from Riley Greene for two runs, added another in the sixth inning and then got a pair of solo home runs late, including Torkelson’s, to win the game in walk off fashion.

The days with back-to-back home runs also come after an extended slump to start the season for Torkelson.

“I’m proud of him, because it’s mentally for him, you know, he’s getting a lot of questions,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “He’s getting a lot of doubt. But never internal. Never by us, never by his teammates, and certainly not by him.”

Detroit Tigers’ Justin Verlander shares promising update on hip injury after bullpen

Coming off a bullpen session Wednesday, Verlander said he didn’t feel any issues with his hip or how it responded. After his first rehab bullpen session a few weeks prior, it didn’t respond the way he’d wanted, he said. Additionally, after struggling to maintain his mechanics in his first bullpen session, Verlander said his mechanics were consistent and solid in this latest throwing session.

Verlander said this is a potential issue he could push through to pitch, if necessary, but that not letting it fester and getting it fully sorted out is probably the best course of action.

“It’s kind of one of those things that you can push through, which is good,” Verlander said. “On the other hand, I think mechanically, when I was really trying to step on it, it was affecting my mechanics a little bit. So that’s where it’s like, ‘OK, well, it’s affecting mechanics.’ Like, I don’t care how much pain you can work through, you don’t want to cut off your noses in spite of your face, maybe do something that you don’t want to do, physically.”

Next steps for Verlander have not been hashed out, as he needs to discuss his rehab with manager AJ Hinch, pitching coach Chris Fetter and the Tigers’ medical staff. Verlander will travel with the team to Cincinnati, Hinch said.

On Riley Greene;

there’s still the eye test.

And with Greene, the eyes tell you he’s definitely shortened his swing a bit, and while that’s led to a slight downtick in exit velocity, it’s also led to more consistent contact — and still good contact. He had two excellent (and shortened) swings in Thursday’s game, including a first-inning, no-doubt home run on which the Brewers’ outfielders barely moved (you don’t see that too often on opposite-field homers from people not named Miguel Cabrera in his prime), and then on a single that helped lead to an add-on run in the sixth inning (another opposite-field hit, against a left-handed pitcher, no less).

Yes, it’s early. But change is evident. And like in many cases in life, change can be a good thing. Rocky told us so.

Abbott has unfortunately been awful this year. The Reds are either awful at the plate or electric (there is no in between). Singer has been atrocious on the mound this year. Lowder is very hit or miss. It should be a good series.
