Tigers vs Twins: April 6-9

In the too small sample size, Green’s chase rate is way way down to start the season. McGonigle has a higher chase rate than Green does at the moment

Warm weather guy

It wouldn’t shock me if the weather has had something to do with the pitching results as of late, especially the starters

I didnt know that, but makes sense as Riley’s on pace to strike out less, so that’s good…but I do know what the basic performance stats are so far between the two in this way early snapshot…and still not a good start for Riley, but his 6 RBI’s so far show he’s at least had some timely hits

Riley .190 BA 0 HR 6RBI and a paltry .563 OPS

McG .292 BA 0 HR 7RBI and a solid .808 OPS

I can live with high chase rate if numbers are that good re McG :man_shrugging:

From the freep

Before Wednesday’s game, Hinch revealed what the Tigers have been working on with all of their players early in the season – which extends throughout the entire 162-game schedule.

For position players, it’s refusing to chase bad pitches and hitting the ball hard. For pitchers, it’s throwing first-pitch strikes and getting into leverage with two strikes.

“It’s a tricky time when you look at guys coming out of the spring,” Hinch said. “They’re hot or they’re cold, or they run into some bad luck or don’t get something to fall, and there’s the psychology that comes with the big board putting your numbers up there.”

For MLB position players, the average chase rate is 29.9% and the average exit velocity is 89 mph.

The Tigers have seven players chasing less than league average: Gleyber Torres (15.4%), Spencer Torkelson (16.3%), Colt Keith (18%), Riley Greene (24.8%), Kevin McGonigle (28.4%), Parker Meadows (29.2%) and Zach McKinstry (29.3%). The Tigers also have four players hitting the ball harder than league average, Keith (95.1 mph), Dillon Dingler (93 mph), Kerry Carpenter (92.1 mph) and Jake Rogers (90.9 mph).

Only Keith shows up on both lists.\

“In April, you can certainly overreact to a lot of things as the competition gets stronger,” Hinch said. “You can also underreact if you just chalk it up to just April. I think it’s a fine line in coaching to address the things that create success and create wins.”

That lowkey irritates me a bit more regarding Keith being the best bat on the team, yet getting pinched for Jemai Jones in some pretty crucial/key AB’s up to this point…sigh

Yep, Hinch plays matchups no matter who the hitter is.

Drives me nuts as well, just at a point where I know it won’t change and Hinch’s managing has done well so …… is what it is…. fricking irritating.

BTW, there is a photo out there, your profile pic, where the NCAA Trophy was added to him sitting there in Breslin.

And it probably crushes morale.

:joy::joy::joy: I guess that’s why AJ makes the big bucks. He’s playing 4D chess.

Am I the only one not stressed out about this team yet, or maybe I’m delusional?

I actually think this is going to end up being a really good ball club this season

I’m not, way too early.
Seeing positives from the plate just a lack of consistency which isn’t a shock coming out of ST. Right now they are 12-13 in hitting on avg. Top 8 for OBP, top 8 for K’s, thank you Kerry Carpenter, 19th for slugging, 13 for OPS

Curious on how Tiger hitters are dealing with ABS and if staff has asked them to refrain.

Seeing negatives in the field, more the OF than infield which is somewhat surprising.

BP is up and down, not unusual for pens

SP looked strong and then struggled. Struggles seem to coincide with the weather getting much colder.

The old school in me, as @KarlKaliente said, waits til Memorial day or 40game mark to judge what the team is/isn’t.

Some definite concerns on a few guys at the plate.

First thing I would do is designate J Jones and bring up Perez. Switch hitter and can play multiple positions. Something Jones cannot do and plays into how Hinch likes to manage.

Today’s pitching matchup is going to be epic. We got Flaherty with his 7.56 era against Abel with his 11.05 era.

And yet somehow we’ll probably lose 1-0.

I’d love to hold the opposing team under 4 runs for a change.

McG and Dingler are both out of the lineup today so you might just be right.

Maybe a couple of our guys can break out today. I still think that Green is close. He is striking out a lot less and driving the ball a lot more.

Just win a single baseball game. Please?
