Scouting report

:arrow_forward: Montero, Tigers: He’s enjoying a strong month: 3-1 in four starts, limited hitters to a .210/.289/.333 slash line with 18 strikeouts and eight walks. He limited the Yankees to two hits over five innings last time out. Adding a two-seam fastball has helped neutralize right-handed hitters but, more importantly, he’s been able to dot his four-seamer around the edges of the plate and that’s helped open up his slider and curveball.

:arrow_forward: Flexen, White Sox: He’s only finished five innings once in his last six starts. He throws cutters, changeups, curves and sliders off a pedestrian 91 mph four-seam fastball that has a run value, per Statcast, of minus-10. He’s gets very few strikeouts (15.7%) and has a high walk rate (9.4%). When he’s in the zone, he gets hit (.826 opponent OPS).

One other Tidbit from the article regarding Casey Mize:
After Saturday, Skubal’s next start seems likely to be Aug. 31 against the Boston Red Sox on six days rest. In that case, the Tigers will be able to give Skubal two extra days with an all-too-common bulk-reliever game and the return of starter Casey Mize who is eligible to re-activated August 30th.

Limiting Skubal’s innings is probably the right thing to do, but I hope it doesn’t affect the Cy Young race. He deserves that award, and the fans deserve to see it unfold.

A 4 game series against The White Sox?

Christmas came early this year.

Flexen has no reason to be, erratic Cannon and Goldenrod backed up by a 1/4 of the Rat Pack.

Need 3 here.

Preview of the young kids, well actually, a live look at the young kids tonight, plus Vierling

Gotta say that Keith makes me nervous every time a ground ball is hit to him.

Vierling comes through and gives the Tigers a 3-2 lead in the 7th

Holy smokes, nice grab by Kreidler to end the game. Nice win.

Parker Meadows OPS about to crest .700

With his D. .700-.725 is an acceptable floor.

Tork’s gonna have to Jam Ass to get to. 700, and his floor should be .775-.800 given his patchy D.

That means 240/320/475, which again is very Hoskins/Mayberryish as what feels like a ceiling.

Steve Garvey he aint!

Baez to the DL, Kreidler up, chance Baez is done for the season…yea, not gonna hurt my feelings…

New role for Kreidler

Shortstop Ryan Kreidler was called up from Triple-A Toledo to take Báez’s spot on the roster. It is his third call-up this season, but this one is different.

“He’s going to be working in a utility role,” Hinch said.

Rookie Trey Sweeney, acquired by the Tigers from the Dodgers in the Jack Flaherty trade, will get the bulk of the starts at shortstop.

“Kreids will start at shortstop tomorrow against (White Sox lefty) Ky Bush,” Hinch said. “I will mix him in at short, third and maybe even at second base. He played some center field in this last stint at Toledo, too.

“He’s going to be in a true utility role, kind of a right-handed version of Zach McKinstry.”

In 15 games since he was optioned to Toledo on Aug. 2, Kreidler was hitting .246/.339/.437 with a double, two triples and two home runs.

Last hurdle

Barring any setbacks, right-hander Casey Mize will make his final rehab start with Toledo on Saturday. He’s built up to 63 pitches and in his last two starts he’s pitched into the fourth inning.

“We hope so,” Hinch said when asked if this was Mize’s last one. “It was mapped out to be a decision point after that. We hope he can build his endurance. That’s the biggest thing separating him from being able to come back versus where he’s at right now.”

Mize has allowed just one run in nine innings with the Mud Hens, with 10 strikeouts and four walks. The Tigers, though, want to see him maintain his stuff and his command as he gets into and through five innings.

“I talked to him on the phone this week,” Hinch said. “I told him to make sure he accomplishes something in this outing to put himself in the best position to be activated. He still needs to accomplish a few things in order to solidify that.”

Mize, out since July 1 with a left hamstring strain, is eligible to come off the injured list Aug. 30.

Hopefully Hinch doesn’t get too crazy with the lineup today. At least we have Skubal on the mound today and not Meada.

Well, he outmaneuvered Grady Sizemore, how did I not know he was a manager, with his lineups yesterday. Hinch did so from the beginning of the game and out coached him in the 9th.

Absolutely. He did a much better job yesterday than what he tried to do in that last game against the Cubs. But today is against another Lefty, so we’ll see. But like I said, having Skubal on the mound should help any defensive liabilities Hinch decides to throw out there today.

Looks like here’s today’s lineup. That’s what’s posted on ESPN anyway.

Jung, Sweeney, and Carp on the bench, but definitely nothing crazy.
