# In wide-open AL race, Tigers might have edge with Tarik Skubal, AJ Hinch

The Detroit News asked three MLB Network analysts — Reynolds, Casey and Jon Paul Morosi — for their thoughts on where things stand in the AL and with the Tigers.

Is the AL as wide open as it appears?

Everyone agreed there is no dominant team.

“It is absolutely wide open, and I delight in saying that I have no idea how this is going to play out,” Morosi said. "It’s remarkable to me — and it feels this way more than ever before — I travel to different cities, and you hear from fans and media members and people around the ballpark that their team, however good they are, is very flawed.

“No matter how good or flawed you think your team is, you look around the American League landscape and all the contending teams’ fan bases are feeling the same way.”

The Tigers, Blue Jays, Yankees and Astros have all, at times, looked capable of running away and establishing themselves as the top seed in the AL. But the warts of each roster come into play, and they all remain in a tight pack, unable to shake themselves from the rest.

“There isn’t a clear-cut favorite,” Reynolds said. “Everybody is dealing with their own specific issues.”

Interestingly, several teams, such as the Yankees, Red Sox, Texas Rangers, Cleveland Guardians and Kansas City Royals, have played better baseball than the division leaders and could still pose a threat.

Skubal’s dominance

One reason the Tigers have a superb chance of advancing far is Skubal.

Following up last year’s Cy Young Award-winning season with an equally dominating campaign, Skubal gives the Tigers an opportunity to win multiple games in any series. There are some impressive aces scattered among the AL’s best teams, but no one has shown to be better than Skubal.

“You have to have that top gun and the Tigers definitely have that in Skubal,” Reynolds said.

The number of true old-school, dominant No. 1 starters is dwindling. To have one, especially if you’re a playoff contender, is a bonus.

The Tigers have a confidence knowing they have a huge chance of winning every Skubal start. That’s doubly important come playoff time.

“He truly is an ace,” Casey said. “He’s a guy who can take over a game right away, right out of the gate. To have a weapon like that, it’s pretty incredible.”

A hardened Tigers team

Reynolds admits, as likely most baseball viewers did, he was hesitant about the Tigers’ playoff chances during the slump right after the All-Star break.

But the ability to come through it relatively unscathed, having Hinch’s calmness around, and the experience the Tigers gained last year all are big plusses.

“They’ve weathered the storm,” Reynolds said. “They went through a rough stretch there, but they’ve righted the ship.”

Casey doesn’t think the Tigers’ offensive ability gets enough credit.

“Riley Greene has done a great job, and you have Gleyber (Torres) who has really stepped up and Torkelson can beat you with one swing of the bat,” Casey said. "But then you have AJ, who is such a huge X factor, and the way he can use that bullpen is a huge weapon.

“I just really like the Tigers a lot.”

For all three analysts, it goes back to the fact the American League lacks a truly dominant team. There is parity across the board, and the Tigers have enough talent to be a factor in October like any other contender.

“Tigers fans are worried, but they’re in first place (in AL Central) by a comfortable margin, so it can’t be that bad,” Morosi said. "I’m a little worried about their general inconsistency since the All-Star break. Part of that is their starting Opening Day rotation and the pitchers they thought they would have (Alex Cobb, Jackson Jobe and Reese Olson all injured). It’s become taxing on the key starters that are still there.

"To me, it’s still a team that if things break right, they can win the World Series. Maybe not easily, but they can win the World Series.

"But that’s also true of a number of teams in the American League.

Dugout advantage

The way Hinch and pitching coach Chris Fetter cobbled the bullpen together last year and worked the “pitching chaos” into such an advantage for the Tigers gives Morosi confidence they can do it again.

“There are question marks but there are still some question marks that can be answered in the affirmative,” Morosi said. “(And) the manager and pitching coach are people who understand how to navigate a postseason game. They’ve shown they can do that.”

Casey believes Detroit has the ingredients again to enable Hinch to baffle opponents with a variety of favorable matchups for the Tigers.

“They do such a good job with analytics,” Casey said. “As far as using that bullpen and when to go to it, you saw it last year the way AJ does it — go to it early, mix and match, and do it early.”

If they have a nine game lead, the magic number is 10. It would be 9 only if they win the tie-breaker with Cleveland.
