Nah, that was a bad call and I don’t need hindsight for that.
I even said it on 2nd down in the GDT, do NOT run the ball (you can check the thread if you don’t believe me).
The 3 timeouts were the only chance they had to realistically win the game and the risk of getting stopped short and having to burn a timeout far outweighed the risk of throwing a pass on 3rd down and even when Monty got stopped, taking the timeout was the wrong call. The moment they took the timeout, the game was over.
I hated it at the time so I think Brady is spot on here. It was the worst call of the game, lower percentage call than either of the 4th downs.
Okay. Agree to disagree. I would of course prefer they just pass the ball but if I’m making the decision to run it there I want contingencies. If I’m calling a run then I’m running some type of pin pull Buck sweep and let Monty know that if it’s not there and letting Monty know that there are three options: TD, Out of Bounds of throw it away. If that results in a five yard penalty for illegal man downfield oh well. I would imagine the 49ers would decline it but I’m okay with whichever path they choose.
If you disagree that’s fine. What we do agree on is that the TOs are the critical component and must be preserved.
100% on the same page. Mahomes tied the Chiefs is what, 12 seconds a couple years ago? Once again, IF we stopped SF and got the ball back, we still only have maybe a 20% chance of getting it to a attemptable FG. We also don’t have a great kicker. With that said, we had almost a zero % chance once that TO was burned.
It didn’t lose us the game, but it made it so we had no chance of coming back (besides an onside kick attemp with a 3-4% chance of getting it).
Purdy scrambling was not planned. He only did it on broken plays, which have killed us all year. You really think SF is running the ball with Purdy in that situation. 90% of teams would run the ball three straight times and if they don’t convert, punt. They couldn’t afford to leave us with a TO left.
Regardless, the decision we made pretty much eliminated any chance we had.
Its a lesson I am sure Campbell will bank and likely won’t make the same mistake again.
I would have rather just dropped back twice and have Jared throw seeds. My point was more about not having contingencies. All the chips in the center of the table was unnecessary.
So using D Mont as basically an option QB? If that’s the case, I say let him throw the pass to the open WR if it’s there, no need to throw it at his feet, he’s a high school QB after all. That would be one hell of a call and would certainly fit with Ben getting cute. They would never expect it.
Again, I thought he should have kick. The decision is over and done with. I hope Campbell learns to get more of a pulse of situation. Yes your team would want to go for it every time but you as a coach have to protect them. You are the trainer and corner man. The team is the fighter. You see things they cannot. F_ck analytics and make a solid judgement call based on how to prevent momentum for the opposition and how your team is playing or potentially losing momentum
I agree with all of that. If I had any qualms with coaching it was having more conviction to run the ball in the second half. With Monty in particular.
I agree totally and we shouldn’t have the turd burger 3rd quarters we have had. We literally were the first team in NFL history to blow a 17 point lead in the 2nd half of a NFFCC game!
