Not football but will post here anyways as seems like a significant UM addition on the hockey front.

Huge, needed LB help in the class

Speaking of LB’s, wonder how that room will be this year. Quite a bit of question marks about that group

I was so afraid that the whole Moore thing was going to kill us in recruiting for the next several years. Wittingham is killing it though in spite of all the negative press. We definitely hired the right guy I think.

I think they hired the stabilizing force they needed and hope they are grooming one of these young coordinators to take over for Whittingham down the road. That said, I still think they’re recruiting and use of the transfer portal needs to elevate. It’s good, but not consistently elite (top 5). They need a football version of Dusty May - has the ability to recruit, use the transfer portal AND develop that talent. This was one of Harbaughs greatest talents.

I’m not sure UM will ever be top five on a consistent basis and not sure they need to in order to win.
Just happy to have Whittingham on board and I do believe one of those coordinators will be the next coach

Pretty hard to gage consistency on anything when you are looking at a one year sample.

Too early to guage consistency re: Whittingham, I was speaking on a broader timeline about needing to elevate recruiting and use of the transfer portal.

Harbaugh chased a lot of 5 star athletes when he first went to AA with mixed results at best. He had respectable teams, but it wasn’t until he changed his approach to focusing on a certain type of player over how many stars they had where he really started to elevate the production.

Don’t get me wrong, there were a lot of other things that went into that also. He finally got the correct staff together. He fixed the defensive problem. He also changed his approach to coaching. He went in as a barking Schembechler tyrant and left a players coach.

I think Whittingham is years ahead of where Harbaugh was when he arrived. A big part of that is they took over two entirely different programs. Whittingham comes into better facilities, NIL in place and a program talented enough to compete. What he personally brings is he’s been consistently one of the best coaches in the country at developing talent. That’s what they have missed the last couple years under Moore. You just never saw the development of the talent being brought in.

Moore was to busy trying to develop other non-football related talents.
