US Open: Oakmont 2025

thought Bob McIntyre might win it when he posted +1 in the clubhouse….

but JJ hit a clutch drive on 17…. and that was the game changer!

I enjoy the tough course. The course should be set up so that the skill level of the players makes par tough.

The PGA as a whole in my opinion has made courses that cater to long hitters that may not be that accurate. It is a drive and putt game now and the premium on accuracy has diminished some. So having a course that tests the golfers in all phases is refreshing as it opens up the field.

Some courses are set up so that if you can not reach the par 5s in 2 you likely have no chance.

I agree with you 100%. I actually started writing a full reply and it turned into a mini rant book! My controlled response is, the PGA loves the bomb and gouge game because people love seeing big driving numbers, and because a big bomb, a close wedge shot and a tap in birdie plays much faster than a tough course that best guys are fighting like hell to make par. That means the fringe or poorer playing guys are shooting bogey or worse, more strokes = more time and people want their instant dopamine hits of big drive, close chip, birdie or eagle. People get bored and change the channel watching a guy send one out into the trees, or watching a ball roll back off into the water. In my opinion, the Masters and US Open are the only two American tournaments that making the course crazy hard is acceptable. The Open also does for sure, but that’s also played under a different set of rules.

All you would have to do to make other courses as daunting is quit mowing anything but the fairways and greens.
