I’m not a vet, but maybe you could talk with a group of vets and ask them, who they like or what they think??

Talk to your local VA assistance or American Legion for best advice. You have to get a VA certificate of eligibility, which you can do online, outside of that it is not much different than a normal mortgage you just dont have to make a down payment .

Talk to several mortgage brokers, some have special rates or closing cost assistance.
