Virginia Tech hires James Franklin

Virginia Tech is hiring James Franklin to fill its coaching vacancy as the two sides are finalizing an agreement, sources confirmed to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz. Franklin, one of the top names on the open market, was fired by Penn State amid a 3-3 start to the 2025 season.

The Hokies also made a midseason coaching change when they decided to move on from Brent Pry on Sept. 14. Pry, a former assistant of Franklin’s at Penn State, started the 2025 campaign with an 0-3 record and had just one winning season in four years at Virginia Tech.

Franklin spent 12 seasons at Penn State. The Nittany Lions finished below .500 just once during his tenure, and that was in the COVID-shortened 2020 season.

Seems like a one year stop gap for him. Virginia tech is just as bad as msu..

Depends. He can do exactly what he did at Penn state and Virginia tech fans will love him. Much less pressure there. He can be Kirk ferentz and stay there for 20 years winning 8 games a season.

I get it, but hes better then v tech

How so? He’s not as good as Beamer and Virginia tech was fine for him and his family.

Because he is a 10 plus winning coach, acc is trash dump

Agree with you, think VaTech could be a good fit long term or until he gets the itch to move up again

Acc is trash . You dont think a Florida, lsu or hell maybe uofm doesn’t call him up at some point . Even though I actually like Moore as a recruiter and a coach. Just feel like its 2 years and gone. Coaches bounce around a ton these days

Much like 85 percent of the big 10 lol

Please don’t ever let Franklin coach UM, please no.

I just think Franklin will struggle and isn’t as good of a coach as many think he is, I doubt he would fare well in the SEC either.
