What differences have you seen between Matt Stafford and Jared Goff based off how they play?

I ask this because I have nearly forgot how Stafford played here now that we have Goff. you guys observe and know many different things that I may have never thought about-this is why your opinions matter.

Can we make jokes bud?

Stafford was better at dealing with pressure and escaping for a first down

Goff is better at not being randomly rtardd

Biggest stylistic differences as they come to mind…

Stafford was a bit streaky. Even Campbell said that if you hit him he gets better. He often comes out cold and takes a while to find a groove.

Stafford could manufacture confidence. Goff is more reliant on what’s around him.

Goff is consistent. You don’t really anticipate his first few passes being sketchy. His ability to throw at a high completion rate isn’t just string of passes in a game, it’s passes over a string of games.

Goff’s fastball is available to him, but not every pass is a fastball. There was a game where he put a fastball on a receiver last year in a tight window where the ball literally got through his receiver’s hands and bounced off his numbers. If you’re a receiver for Stafford, you’re ready for those passes on every throw.

Goff’s base and delivery is the same for all of his passes. In order for Stafford to take a little off his passes, he has a bit of a fade-away type form. Stafford is a fastball thrower almost exclusively and has taken numerous years to develop touch. You just like to see a QB who can change up his throws from a consistent base, such as Goff’s.

Stafford’s no-look passes and manipulation of the defense with his eyes are league-best.

Goff plays taller in the pocket and I feel keeps his eyes downfield. One of the things that people knock Goff for is how he doesn’t play well under pressure. I feel like that’s a bit too broad of a statement. I see a guy that will wait for a play to develop while the pocket is collapsing around him. He is not as apt to force the ball somewhere due to pressure.

Goff is reliant on rapport with the receivers more than Stafford. I think part of it is that he’s playing with more anticipation than Stafford. He’s reading his receivers earlier in their route, IMO. Stafford is throwing to the guy who has won his matchup… Goff is throwing to the guy who is winning, with a bit more touch and anticipation. That comes from rapport and the receivers executing their routes with precision.

Building on that last point, there was a time (Linehan years) where our receivers had no choice routes. CJ chuckled a bit when asked about it at training camp when Caldwell and Lombardi arrived. This offense sometimes requires receivers to make route choices based on DB/leverage. This wasn’t the case early in the Stafford years. The call came in and Stafford made adjustments at the line. Goff has to play with more trust/rapport in receivers, beyond just hands. He has to trust that their read is his read and their reaction to defense is as-taught so that his pass will go to his guy instead of their guy. We’ve seen some INT’s (Swift comes to mind) where the receiver broke in the wrong direction. Rapport. Goff is reliant on it because this system demands it. This is probably where a lot of the consistency comes in, too. You don’t need a “feel” for how your team is going to do against the opponent in order to know where to throw the ball. You throw the ball with the same anticipation based on the same cues that you do the game before and in practice all week.

I think Stafford is the more physically gifted player.

I think Goff has had much better coaching over the course of his career than Matt has.

I think if Stafford had gotten coached by Mcvay starting in his second season he would have been much more successful in his career.

I’m not sure there’s very many Quarterbacks that could have done what Goff has……gettting traded to Detroit and winning playoffs games and a 15 win season for this franchise is unreal.

Honestly love them both, but the difference is Matt wanted out and Goff has been a big part of the most enjoyable stretch of Lions football in my lifetime.

Oooh, next let’s do Joey Harrington vs. Charlie Batch.

I for one never blamed Matt for wanting to move on , the team was a mess being lead by morons that didn’t know how to correctly build lines, and couldn’t run a team and we lost royal, Matt was getting beat to a pulp behind the O-lines, for 12 seasons, he took the beatings-but he knew he wasn’t ever going to win here when we used to be lead by clowns. IF Matt had anything close to Dan and our staff now, he would-have stayed and we would have been winning far more-but would have , could have, should have–it’s all history.

He has experience under Linehan with Hill as his backup where he was asked to process a LOT of information.

He has genuine coaching under Caldwell, where he shared in a QB room with Moore and Orlovsky.

The 100% absolute most important time of Stafford’s career was under Caldwell. He learned a LOT about being a winner under Caldwell.

Linehan’s system provided good experience.

Collaborating with JBC as a vet is what led him to be a success with McVay, IMO.

If McVay has him from his 2nd year on, they win nothing, IMO.

odd-I don’t remember The Lions winning a lot under Caldwell…

Stafford has more arm talent. Stafford would take risks and Goff minimizes risks. Very different mentality.

Stafford would hit these moments in games where he would just say “screw it” and throw the ball even when the odds didn’t favor the decision. Even his body language would change before he threw the ball. You could start yelling “nooooooooooo” at the TV because his mechanics went in the trash and he just arm powered it and sometimes it was good, and sometimes it was very bad. Gunslinger mentality.

To start a game goff

To come back down 30 with 5 minutes left because he was sleepwalking and want to win it anyways. Stafford.

The two most important people for stafford were caldwell for mechanics and matt ryan for diet.
