What in the world was Bob Quinn doing with the future WR situation?

I’m completely puzzled by what Quinn was doing with the WR situation for next year. No Golladay contract. No Marvin Jones. Quintez Cephus and…who else?

Am I missing something, or was he painting himself into a corner again in the draft by forcing himself to have to take a WR high in the draft, much like he did with the CB position this year?

I am still hoping they can resign Marvin and Sanu. Late round draft and FA on the other WRs. Start using the TEs more.

I’d like to see Marvin get resigned by the Lions, not sure about Sanu. TY Hilton, Allen Robinson & Sammy Watkins are some of the WRs that are slated to be free agent next year. I’m sure they’ll be on the new GMs radar.

Yeah that’s gonna be a big part of the GMs opening salvo.

I can see the new GM drafting a WR in the first 3 rounds, perhaps tagging KG and letting Marvin walk.
Marvin has played well and if he can be signed to a reasonable deal then I’m for it, but I’m not sure he provides more than what Sanu can do and Sanu probably will cost a fraction of what Marvin does.

Starting to like Cepheus too, he’s came on a bit in the last few games. Starting to actually catch the ball, which seemed to be his biggest issue early on.

Lots of good WRs in this years draft though, it would be smart to take one earlier and hope he develops so we can potentially let KG walk if he continues to struggle to get healthy next year.

You could literally do this with just about every position group. What was he doing with the o-line? Signed vai tai to a big contract and let glasgow go? Left no packup center on the roster? Did he expect a 6ft 6 guard he drafted who has never snapped to become a center in logan stenberg? What is he doing? Why did we just cut bait with Rick Wagner when he wasn’t costing us much this year to keep?

And the linebackers! My goodness that group is terrible.

Could be wrong but isn’t Geronimo Allison under contract for 2021 too?

Golladay situation is going to be key. Lions really can’t afford to franchise him with other holes they have. But they could look at a long term deal that is more cap friendly. Great player and you always want to keep home grown players. But…do you take Golladay or go after another player of similar caliber like an Allen Robinson?

Or do you resign Marvin and go after another WR like Corey Davis or Juju Smith-Schuster with similar cap hit?

Been a Golladay fan but man it makes you nervous to spend $15M+ a year for a guy coming off multiple injuries and a style of play that doesn’t age well typically.

Clearly our WR group is going to be the first order of business for the incoming GM and HC.

I would even go so far as to say it’s the #1 priority going into the off season.

The plan, I hope, is to at least try to keep our offense from falling off a cliff. We can do that by keeping Stafford in place and focusing first and foremost on making sure he has some talent to throw to.

Resign Jones and Sanu.
Let Golladay walk, and use that cap space somewhere else.
Draft a WR high. Like in the first 2 rounds. I’m even game for our first pick being a WR.

That’s it. Minimal effort. Saves money by letting KG walk. Brings in a young talented received on the cheap, which allows us to push those monies to the Defensive side of the ball.

All other efforts can be on addressing our Defense.

Quinn took a winning organization and turned it into a bottom dweller.

I’m up for this.

I’d also argue it’s going to be very difficult for this franchise to draw in a great wr through free agency, so it’s time to draft high.

Spend the rest of the picks on defense.

Guys we are not 1 top WR away from respectability.

Hell We had Calvin Johnson for 10 years and never won a playoff game!

Plenty of teams run successful offenses without any big name receivers.

And considering that the goal is to replace KG, remember that he was a 3rd rounder that no one heard of when he was drafted.

When the rest of the team comes around, we can always trade/pay for a #1 to put us over the top (diggs, Hopkins)

not a “winning” organization, but one that began to claw it’s way out of a fog…Quinn kicked the team in the balls and stepped on their heads, back to obscure again.

Nobody said we need a top receiver. I even argued it would be tough to convince one to come here.

But if you’re going to draft and develop a young QB, you better get him a quality guy to build a rapport with right away.

I agree. I was referring to not drafting a WR in the first or second. Just feel like it would be a wasted pick for us right now.

I think a WR in the 3rd or 4th would make sense to continue to build depth and hope we hit another homer like with KG.

Just put a full post about this on a macro level. It’s not just WR, it’s the whole team. Obviously there is a reason they were canned, but it’s almost
Criminally negligent.

We have 1 year left from the overpaid Trufant. They have to decide whether to pay 4M to cut Coleman or nearly 10M to keep him?? Ughh

We will likely see 1 more game from J Davis, and unless the next regime likes slow, stiff, weak mlbs with PFF ratings in the 20s, then Tavaii is probably gone in the next offseason. Leaving us just Collins

If we give credit to Jeff Okudah for having a bright future- still nervous… then we have Okudah, Collins, Flowers, Decker, Hockensen, Swift, and Stafford… that’s right we currently have “7” above average players with 2 or more years left on their contracts.

The reason it feels like we are always rebuilding? We are!!! This is our 3rd straight GM who hasn’t figured put the value of extending his own guys…

Slay wanted to be here. Diggs wanted to be here. Glasgow wanted an extension! Golladay and Marvin want to be here- or they did before this year!!!

Any WR we sign is going to demand 10-18m per year. Guys like Adam Humphries and Cole Beasley get 9m per.

Math???

Take a guy like Golladay with 1-2 years left on his rookie deal. You’ve already witnessed 1100 yards and 7 tds in 2018. Your pick was validated. Heck, half way through 2019 he was on pace for another 1100 yards and double digit tds. He begged for an extension.

4 years and 64M likely would have done the trick. Add the 2020 at around 1M and it would have been a 5 year and 65M investment. Could we have gotten a better value than an average of 13m per? Nope.

Once a team let’s a player get to the end of his contract, that player usually either leaves or even if he stays, he gets a record deal.

Remember when Stafford had that ugly contract for like 1-2 years?

Now he’s the 14th highest paid per average annual pay.

So now is the time… a 3 year extension for 100M would still have him around #7-8 in average pay. It locks him up through 37.

Swift and Hock, extend Golladay and Jones, and keep Kerryon and Cepheus in 2021

Let AP and Ammendola go to pasture. Cut James.

Use the draft and Ufa on D
