SMiLE - Beach Boys (who am I kidding, Brian Wilson was 100% in charge of this one.) I listen to it for about a month every year, and think it’s multitudes better than Pet Sounds. The opening track “Our Prayer” is enough all by itself, let alone the whole album. It really bums me out that they didn’t release it back in the 60’s, and I think that fact really exacerbated Brian’s mental issues.
NOFX: Punk In Drublic - oddly enough, I’ve only started listening to this band fairly recently despite them being on a farewell tour.
The Offspring: Smash - what can I say about this album? It lead to them adopting a much more poppy sound, so I like looking back at this one as the last true pubk album they released.
Bad Religion: The Process of Belief - I’ve basically had my entire faith shattered in the last few years, so this one hits home in a way it didn’t do before. It bums me out that I’ll likely never see this band live unless I shell out a ton of money for a festival, which also means that it’ll be a 30-40 minute set rather than a full concert.
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes: Entire Discography - This is also a band that’s been around a while that somehow was never on my radar until this year. They’re a pop-punk cover band and take a lot of guilty pleasure songs and spin them into pure gold. I highly recommend everyone here gives them a listen, as they cover several genres of music and truly have something for everyone.
I saw them in 1993 at St Andrews. Openers were Seaweed and some band nobody had ever heard of named Green Day. This was a few months before Dookie dropped and well before their punk was popified. Epic show.
I’m pretty sure Don Toliver is going to be my #1 artist of 2023. Too Many Nights coming out last December put me on him.
As for recent releases? I mean…come on. Drake just dropped, and he said he’s probably not releasing anything for a while after this, which I can understand for him. Drake and J. Cole on the same song finally happened so we’re still busy celebrating that.
Man, I listen to so much music its hard to pinpoint individuals. Always listening to various podcasts and love travelling down YouTube’s numerous wormholes.
