Aaron Glenn is loyal to his guys.
To a fault.
Have to respect that.
Yet, we have to win…
Are you that guy? Or no?
Are you that guy?
We will see.

Is it to a fault? Or do we fall victim to as fans having shorter time horizons than our coaches and front office staff?
Football players are good from day one. You saw it with ST. Brown, Laporta, Jack Campbell, Gibbs…
You are good at football or you arent…let them Billionaire Babies draft otherwise…
We draft real players around here…
Now… watch… the media take off with this take…
They already have been talking what ive been tellin em’
Because at the time we had our double O corners of the future - Okudah and Oruwariye. We had a hurt Tracy and another guy who posted “get me out of Detroit” at safety. Iffy was being a good soldier but he learning how to play safety was making his head spin. Never agreed with the move. They moved the wrong guy to safety - should have been Okudah.
So here we are - now we have an OK safety group and a hole at CB 2 (arguably a hole at both corner spots). With Iffy finally up to speed at safety. Maybe they really like Vildor, but unless Iffy forgot how to play corner, he seems like one of the five best DB’s who should be starting.
I’m not convinced they drafted him for any other reason than to play Safety. But I don’t think playing Safety has stunted his growth in any way. It’s always been availability. Like with Harris, I would imagine that AG will play Iffy wherever he’s needed.
That’s an inaccurate statement
This is an optimistic point of view-considering it actually means Glenn knows who the best players are For eg: see James Houston at the beginning of this season
I dunno. IIRC, it wasn’t until after his rookie year that he started learning safety. I vividly remember an interview with him during pre-saeson of his second year where he was saying all the right things but you could tell he was both disappointed and overwhelmed learning a new spot.
Yes, he had some tough luck with injuries which has hurt his development. I don’t think it was only that through.
100%
A best case scenario would be that our D balls out for the rest of the season, AG becomes a hot commodity again, and we lose him to a sucker of a team. I just don’t trust AG.
I’m at the point where I probably trust your vivid memories more than my own.
your vivid memories
few and far between!
and we lose him to a sucker of a team. I just don’t trust AG.
2021, 2022 and 2023 Defensive DVOA: 29, 27, 15.
People lament the DL and yet we are:
1st in the NFL in hurry rate
4th in QB Knockdown rate
4th in pressure %
All while being just 15th in blitz rate.
Unfortunately that somewhat amazingly only translates to 25th in sacks.
But as @Thats2 has often pointed out sacks have by far the most variance of the pressure stats.
SO … provided the defense doesn’t completely fall back apart then AG deserves to be back. Get him some more coverage players and another pass rusher and hope for better health and continued development of our youngsters. One more leap forward and we’re a fringe elite defense.
Ag isnt bad…but he isnt good, either.
Those are facts.
Sidenote: AG does not handle the media well. Head coach? Not unless you want an implosion. Wish the for him, but being defensive agaiant the media like he is? Id rather he just give plain answers and say “next question”…
Bill Belichick style…
Ag would implode as a Head Coach…
First loss and media questions?
Defensive Aaron Glenn will erupt like a volcano
It’s not as amazing as it is incomplete, IMO. If we look at PFRs advanced stats, we’ll see several columns where we’re bottom 10.
I figured sack rate, knock down rate, hurry rate, pressure rate and blitz rate was a decently comprehensive summation of our defensive pressure?
Care to share which analytics you think contradict my post? I don’t have access to any subscription sites.
Pro Football Reference is where I found those rankings btw.
When I look at PFR’s advance stats it seems to validate my viewpoint that a lack of quality coverage players is our bugaboo. Perhaps that’s confirmation bias.
I suppose it’s how we interpret the data. Does a high pressure rate pass the eye test? Does it suggest that we’re getting home and forcing the QB into bad decisions? It “suggests” that as a stat, but in reality, that’s not what we’re seeing.
Like, how does a team like the Lions rank as the #1 team in “hurry %” ?
We just brought in a 36-year-old semi-retired DE to help. Well, if we’re #1 in the league, who needs the help?
How does a team with the #1 pressure rate rank 10th worst in Yards per attempt?
Or 8th worst in sack percent?
Or the 4th worst depth of target? If we’re getting home, shouldn’t the ball come out quicker on shallower routes?
10th worst scoring defense.
Maybe I’d summarize it as:
Our actual defensive pressure is poor enough that offenses are running deeper routes and allowing plays to develop. We still score a pressure in the stats, but the offenses are more productive against us.
If I had access to the data, I’d like to see where we stack up in the Time to Throw department. That’s going to be bottom 10, because we both know we’re not forcing that ball out quick.
I think if we look we’ll find that we’re not giving up huge chunk plays either, in comparison to the rest of the league, which means that 4th worst stat isn’t an anomaly due to a handful of big plays.
IMO the defenses biggest issue is consistency. We have had some real good games this year on defense. The Broncos game is a recent example.
But when we are bad…the wheels tend to fall off fast.
If AG’s defense holds Mullens to 14 points would I be surprised? Nope.
If AG’s defense give up 34 to Mullens would I be surprised? Still nope.
That’s how up and down we’ve been.
You explained it differently, but MUCH better than I did in a different thread
