So after seeing it for the upteenth time and still not knowing wtf it was. This is the details. Basically the group wants it “modernized” by updating to exclude college players from getting TV revenue. Thus “saving the athletic department money”
Well thats too damn bad.
Group of 4 generates over 7 BILLION annually. Players deserve a slice of that
I’m done with college sports (save scouting for the draft) so I don’t care one way or the other, but if this has a trickle down effect on the stuff that keeps the NFL’s playing field level (revenue sharing, the draft, a salary cap), then I’m gonna be irate.
but the NFL has a union with a CBA. And the players get rev sharing. In the form of revenue goes up the salary. Cap goes up therefore player contracts go up.
That’s what needs to happen with college football. And again, I see it going to a super league. With 48 or so teams. And it basically becomes a semi pro league. No school required, contracts for players. A salary cap. Etc,
I get it, but in the article they suggest some politicians want to go after their ability to negotiate TV deals collectively, and that each team should have to do it individually (Cowboys fans, I’m thinking). If they do that, it will be the beginning of the end.
“Across all conferences" is a loaded series of words. Not all conferences value their football programs the same. Individual schools also look at the football program differently. Some schools look at it as a “loss leader” that is part of their identity and draws interest to the university. Others view it as part of a bigger picture of sports and academics. Alabama and Duke are going to have different perspectives on how the university should use its money.
You just touched on another “issue” in making this happen. Notre Dame makes more money on their own than in a “collective.” The league loses credibility if Notre Dame is not involved. Which is why they have been given “exemptions" over the years. Their M.O. for football is to march to the beat of their own drum, and any negotiation with them would follow that pattern.
ND either joins the league at the same rate as the other schools or GTFO.
Thats the reality. And they will be joining a conference or league soon enough.
Either joining the ACC full time and get increased revshare like clesmon and FSU get or join the b10/sec league that is definitely coming.
and yes ND has a top 10 athletic revenue HOWEVER they also have a lower profit margin than any other top 30 rev school, mainly because they are not in a conference for football
What they need an investigation into all the college entrance credentials for these kids, their subsequent midterms and finals, and any other qualifying metrics for college standing.
