Thanks for this - here is my list and why:
QB – Johnny Unitas (he perfected his craft at a young age throwing a football through a tire hanging from a tree – was constantly doubted due to his small size and rejected by multiple colleges. Drafted by Pittsburg and then cut he was out of football. At this point he was married and got a job as a construction worker. He played semi-pro ball on the weekends for $6.00. In 1956 he was picked up by Baltimore and after a slow start the rest is history.) Used to love watching him play. Joe Montana would be my second.
RB – Barry (without a doubt)
Walter Payton – Both Barry and Walter were/are great people in addition to being great running backs. Walter played physical, intimidating football while Barry was simply electric.Walter left us far to early.
WR – Jerry Rice (He simply was the best, but his greatness is due to his work ethic. He did not have the physical tools that some wide receivers had. He just outworked everyone else. His workouts are legendary)
Larry Fitzgerald – for similar reasons. He was great but much of his greatness was due to work ethic rather than raw talent.
- Cheating I will add a third and a fourth
– Calvin Johnson (only because he was simply unstoppable due to his physical gifting) I don’t know if we will ever see another receiver that commands triple teams and disrupts defenses so much.
- Raymond Barry – He played with a back brace his entire career. His back would cause one leg to be longer than the other and he also had bad eyesight and wore contact lenses to compensate. Finally, he was slow for the position. His work ethic and precise route running were what made him great.
TE – Tony Gonzalez (he holds or held almost all NFL TE records. Part of the reason was his ability to play – only missed two games his entire career – and his consistency. He only had five games in his career with no receptions. Consistency makes him king.
O-line – Jim Otto center (Tackles get the most attention but centers have the most responsibility. Otto played in 210 consecutive games and a total of 308 for the Raiders. He was good at his job and did it longer than just about anybody).
DT – Alan Page (the enemy played in 238 consecutive games. He was tenacious, smart and disruptive at a time in football when DT’s were run stuffers. He finished his career with 178 sacks (unofficial) from the DT position. He had a knack for diagnosing and blowing up plays. I hated that he played for Minnesota).
DE – Reggie White (He was a man among boys on the field. The best way to defend against him was to avoid his side. He also made everyone around him better. A legendary player, a great human being and someone that left this earth far to early).
LB – REALLY TOUGH TO PICK ONE – The NFL is littered with absolutely great Linebackers.
Lawrence Taylor would probably be my pick. He was so disruptive and like the energizer bunny – he was relentless (probably the coke). He may just be the most disruptive player I have ever watched.
Mike Singletary was probably my favorite LB to watch. His eyes played the game first and then his body followed. He was fun to watch even though a lot of his great plays came against our Lions.
CB – Darrel Green (He was the first CB that truly played the “shut down” corner role. He mirrored teams’ best receivers long before it became normal in defensive schemes. He played way above his height and weight class and simply shut down anyone he went up against. Great person and highly unrated in my opinion). Woodson and Sanders were exceptional, but Darrel did it before either of them.
S – Ronnie Lott (close second and third – Ed Reed, Kenny Houston) This was a tough call but Lott just seemed to be involved in every play. Reed made a lot of splash plays and Houston was a safety that QB’s had to account for. But over a sixty minute game you were consistently hearing and watching Lott make plays all over the field.
K – Ray Guy – first punter to truly help win games for his team.
No Lions players
QB - Peyton Manning
RB - Thurman Thomas, Bo Jackson
WR - Julio Jones, Torry Holt
TE - Tony Gonzalez
OL - Jonathan Ogden
DT - Vince Wilfork
DE - JJ Watt
LB - Ray Lewis
CB - Champ Bailey
S - Brian Dawkins
K - Sebastian Janikowski
QB - Aaron Rodgers - Sue Me, He was awesome in his prime.
RB - Barry Sanders, Marshall Faulk
WR - Randy Moss, Calvin Johnson
TE - Rob Gronkowski
OL - Orlando Pace
DT - Aaron Donald
DE - Reggie White
LB - Chris Spielman
CB - Deion Sanders
S - Merton Hanks
K - Matt Prater
A closet Rodgers fan. Suddenly everything makes so much sense.
I never told you about the darkness retreats…
Favorite might not be the right word, but I did enjoy watching him play. It could just as well be Manning or Mahomes. But I knew nobody else would list Rodgers so I thought what the F.
I knew you had problems, but, nothing could be that bad. How did this happen?
Ah, just saw your last post. Darkness retreats.
You’re still tripping, huh?
