I gave up on ESPN years ago when everything started to become blocked by the paywall. For the past several years I have relied mostly on CBSSports because it’s all free and fairly reliable, if not underwhelming. Their biggest issue is usually being slow to report on breaking news.
Wondering which websites you all find reliable and that stay on top of breaking sports news?
I google Detroit Lions, then hit the news tab. So I guess you could say that I use them all.
For real breaking news, nothing beats the cesspool that is twitter. But you have to make it very, very bespoke to exactly what you want (which they are making harder and harder to do) or you get inundated by social media bullshit.
But I’ve created a list specifically called breaking (and for the moment “lists” are still chronological) where I only follow news breakers like Ian Rapaport, Schefter, and the other news breakers from sports I care about. It’s literally all that’s in there.
I have another list for slightly more in-depth analysis where I follow beat guys like Reisman and Justin Rogers and other legitimate sports news personalities like Nate Tice, Ben Solak, etc… but that one is more prone to being poisoned by their retweets and responses to others, but it’s still more or less fine (and remains chronological). I avoid every other part of Twitter.
Mostly the evil empire unfortunately - ESPN. Would love to take my business somewhere else but they all pretty much suck. I don’t read a lot of articles, mostly just checking the box scores.
For Tigers prospect news, I come here.
NHL.com is way better than ESPN for hockey coverage. They usually have a 3 or 4 minute long highlight reel of entire games that includes every goal.

The rest are entertainment, not news.
Did you hear those jackasses trying to work over Brad and Ray today? How many times did they have to say that they liked the guys they have in the secondary?
I mean, they completely disrespect guys like Rock. He’s not a guy that ‘they consider a starting caliber Corner’, but, he did a great job last year in replacement of TA. The only drop off was holding penalties. He earned the Right to start.
Our backups are better than they’ve been in years.
I see the “Sports Journalists” as professional bitches and entertainers. They really know nothing about running a team, but, they know “sexy”.
Here and ESPN. Not tracking ESPN paywalls. Maybe it’s just the content that I’m looking for from them. I go to ESPN for their headline tracker, upcoming game times, schedules, pitching match ups, lineups, basic stats. If it’s a deep dive stat then I just google that specific stat and then dive into the results from places like NextGen Stats, or Statmuse, or whatever pops up as a source to that specific stat.
For breaking news I almost entirely get that from here. Even if I do run across some breaking news for something by the time I come here it’s been posted by 10 different people already. So yeah, I just let you guys do all the work and I sit back and read about it when it’s posted here. For Detroit sports conversations it is 100% from here.
One thing I can’t stand is sites that inundate me with pop ups and ads when I go to their sites. ESPN is clean. The Den is clean. Most other sports sites you have to close 10,000 pop ups and bottom corner video ads that continuously clutter your screen.
I used to frequent Freep and Detroit News a whole lot more than I do now. 90% of their articles are behind paywalls now and I have no desire to even pay $1 month for their shit.
So yeah. 99% percent of my sports ingestion comes from here and ESPN.
one of the few sites i pay for – the Athletic. Also Mlive. The Score (for results). and google/news (e.g. as someone mentioned - whatever pops up). When I want to look at standings, per se, I always go to ESPN, but that is the only time I use them specifically. I don’t like the way they treat the Lions.
But we all know that Nate’s Den is the best.
Anything I likely will think is important shows up here within minutes of it showing up elsewhere.
The only team I follow throughout the year is the Lions, and honestly The Den is the best place to get quick and accurate information. You even get real time analysis from people knowledgeable about the team without having to sort through all the AI bullshit that has taken over so much of sports journalism.
Twitter for breaking news.
Nothing beats The Athletic for in-depth insider stuff. Well, well worth the money.
Nowhere.
I find that being informed cramps my style.
