Whittingham to UM; five year deal

A friend recently brought up a good point on his son.

His son has spent 8yrs working under one of the best defensive minds in the NFL. He coached every position on that side of the ball, a very young coach with 8yrs of NFL experience.

Think he will bring some upside based on his experience in the coaching profession. Time will tell.

He also didn’t want to be the oldest guy on the staff.

I’m fine with him as a coach. I also get the appeal of coaching with your son before you hang them up. That is something special.

I just think Wallace would have been a home run hire is all, but it takes two to get a deal worked out. Right now Wallace is well positioned to take over at Iowa whenever Ferentz retires. Michigan could not offer him that.

This is a big time hire, especially if he’s taking an analyst role. We’ll see I suppose, but this is Nick Saban level analyst hiring.

I read his resume after seeing the hire, looked impressive.

This wasn’t a well kept secret, but Michigan definitely has one of the top strength and conditioning coaches in the country again. Losing Herbert was a huge loss, but this hire gets them right back.

Insight on Whittingham, new staff

Will Snowden is the father of Michigan cornerback transfer target Smith Snowden, who is set to be in Ann Arbor for a visit on Wednesday after playing for new head coach Kyle Whittingham at Utah.

But Will isn’t just your regular dad. He’s one of the biggest recruiting figures in the state of Utah, operating Alpha Recruits, which provides mentorship, training and travel 7v7 for some of area’s top prospects.

Nobody is more well equipped to talk about Whittingham and his staff than Will.

Kyle still has a lot of juice. He’s a great football mind. More than that, he’ll be able to settle things the way they need to be settled at Michigan. He’s a constant professional. He’s very well respected nationally. Every room he walks into, he’s going to get respect. He’s done it all. He’s coached at a high level, has won big games and has a very high success rate of putting players in the NFL. Michigan hit a grand slam. The guy covers every base. He has the experience, knowledge and temperament to do this job at a high level.ā€

Whittingham finalized his staff over the weekend and filled his coordinator positions in a hurry.

Offensive coordinator Jason Beck is following Whittingham from Utah, while defensive coordinator Jay Hill is coming over from BYU. Will, who played running back at BYU and was actually recruited by Michigan in the late 90s, had high praise for both.

ā€œJason Beck is another coach with a great mind,ā€ Will said. ā€œHe has all the ability in the world to recruit. More importantly, his offensive scheme is great. Everyone thinks he’s a run first OC, but he’s really not. If you look at how effective he was during his years at Virginia, he’s shown he has the ability to coach any type of player, particularly at quarterback. (Bryce) Underwood will be successful in that offense. But really, any quarterback can be successful because he adapts his scheme based on his field general. He’s a great coach and a great recruiter.

ā€œJay Hill was brought up under Kyle Whittingham. He had major success at Weber State. He turned the whole program around and made them a contender in one of the toughest conferences in the FCS. They were in the depths of hell before he came. He turned that around, and there was a drop when he left. Schematically, he puts his players in positions to succeed. I’m really curious to see what he does with all that talent that Michigan is going to have. Jay is an amazing hire.ā€

Perhaps the two biggest splash hires came in the trenches as Michigan hired Jim Harding to coach the offensive line and Lewis Powell to coach the defensive line. Both Harding, a former Michigan high school coach, and Powell are considered elite coaches and high-end recruiters.

ā€œWhen you talk about Lewis Powell, he’s obviously one of the best defensive line coaches in the country and one of the best recruiters in the country,ā€ Will said. ā€œHe can bring that Polynesian pipeline to Michigan. Lewis is a grand slam. Jim Harding is also a home run hire. He’s up there in the Top 5 as one of the best offensive line coaches in the country. He has the ability to recruit. His resume speaks for itself. He puts his o-line guys in the NFL. There really isn’t much he hasn’t done.ā€

Rich Eisen got Whittingham up to speed on the rivalries :joy:

From the News:

Michigan head football coach Kyle Whittingham spelled out what the program needs in the aftermath of the Sherrone Moore firing.

Whittingham, hired Dec. 26, 10 days after Moore was fired after the university found credible evidence he was having a relationship with a staff member, discussed his new job on ā€œThe Dan Patrick Showā€ on Tuesday, although the interview was recorded Monday. Whittingham spent the last 21 seasons as Utah head coach.

ā€œThe place doesn’t need a rebuild, it needs a reboot of trust and getting rid of the drama and just getting back to playing Michigan football without all the distractions,ā€ Whittingham said on the show. ā€œThe one thing is, it didn’t come from the players. The players were not involved. It was not some player issue – it was just the peripheral. Guys here have a great attitude. Quality young men, care about academics, excited to be at Michigan, but they’ve dealt with a lot over the last few years.ā€

Patrick asked Whittingham if he hates Ohio State.

ā€œDon’t I have to?ā€ Whittingham said. ā€œI think I have to.ā€

This is insane
And explains a lot about why Underwood didn’t really improve through the season

Moore was a terrible coach

" Moa follows five-star defensive end Carter Meadows (No. 23 overall) and No. 2 running back Savion Hiter (No. 27) as the third top-40 recruit in the Wolverines’ 2026 class, which released four signees after Moore’s firing.

Moa’s move continues a run of former Utah players following Whittingham to Michigan. The Wolverines have added four portal transfers who played under Whittingham this month, headlined by John Henry Daley, the nation’s No. 6 sack leader in 2025, defensive tackle Jonah Lea’ea and cornerback Smith Snowden, a multiyear starter at Utah"
