Give me a break. 66 is not old in today’s world. Coaches can do their jobs well into their 70s. The guy is in great shape and could be around 5-7 years easily at UM. Beyond that, who cares? In a world of NIL, Portals and expanded playoffs coaching longevity means less.

Are you feeling better about Wittingham now Dan? I know that you were just kind of ‘meh’ about it at first.
As I said in a different thread when Whittingham first stepped down, he has always been one of my favorite coaches in the sport. He’s a good man, he’s a good leader, he runs a good program and he runs the type of program that Michigan wants to be. He checks a lot of boxes. My issue with the hire is not with him.
Whitt has long said he wants to retire by 65. He agreed to the coach in waiting and has sort of been year to year with coaching for a bit. I think once you’re in that mindset you don’t really reverse it. It’s not that he doesn’t have the energy to coach, because he does, it’s that he’s definitely struggling with when to walk away. He’s been fairly public about that. If I’m Michigan, and running a coaching search, I’m looking at others based on that. That’s just me. I don’t think Whitt was expecting to land a job like Michigan. I think he was more thinking he would be less involved going forward. Then again perhaps a new challenge has him at a different place, we’ll see.
I’m not going to keep flooding threads with that point because I do love the guy. He’s a good man and I wish him nothing but success and longevity at Michigan. He appears to be putting together a great staff. I love that he wants to blend the staff. I think that is smart especially as he begins to navigate a program where a lot of people want influence. I’m not sure he’s dealt with anything like that before so having people who have dealt with it in the room is a plus.
Whittingham, more than anything, will build a culture that is Michigan football. I think a coach like Dillingham could have been very special because he’s built from the same mold, but is also very forward thinking. Whittingham has just done it longer. The program is in good hands and he’s a significant upgrade over Sherrone Moore. With that said, Go Blue!

I like the hire. yea he’s older (although he looks like he’s friggin 50) but similar to cignetti, all he does is win. I mean that’s a great coaching record at utah.
I’m also glad it’s not a ‘michigan’ guy. That’s old and tired.
