Who are our guys?

Since it’s bye week I could get away with a draft thread without too bad of a flogging.

So I was curious, who do you think are some of our guys? Not who do you like, though you can, but who do you think Brad and his scouting department love him. Why do you think they love him.

One for me… at CB.

Why Quinyon Mitchell?

  • if the freaks numbers are true he’ll blow away all of our thresholds
  • hyper aggressive like Witherspoon
  • ball skills plus a pinch of gambler (Dre Bly would approve)
  • ridiculous ball production
  • plays locally so easy to vet deeply character, fit wise

He has primarily been in off man which had lead me to believe he might not be someone AG would target. But AG is mixing things up now and if the workout numbers are true I don’t see why he can’t become proficient in press.

So who are some others that you think might be “our guys”?

Very early in the process, but so far my guys are Xavier Legette, Cooper DeJean, Kingsley Suamataia, Troy Fautanu, Taliese Fuaga, Malachi Corley (probably a luxury), Tory Horton, and Leonard Taylor. I haven’t watched any CBs yet with a critical eye, but I really liked what I saw from Caelen Carson when I watched him live.

Excited to dig into them after the season.

Mekhi Wingo seems like a guy they would like I think

I meant “who do you think is a Lions guy?”

Anyone who was a team captain, was productive in college, has decent RAS numbers, and possibly has an injury history.

For a more serious answer, I could see the Lions liking someone like Princely Umanmielen from Florida. I can’t find a lot of people talking about him, but here’s this:

Ah, right, I should have said I like all of them for us, so far. Though a deeper dive might change that. I almost always do my evaluations through a Lions lens, which is why all those positions are currently positions of need.

DeWayne Carter is one i thought of along those lines. 3 time team captain and every time Duke coaches talk about him it’s as though they want their daughters to marry him.

Plays pretty damn violent as well. I don’t necessarily agree with the Twitter guy that he’s just a nose but he’s not going to be some pass rushing virtuoso when at 3T. Though he did have good pass rush productivity in 2021 and 2022.

Day 3 rotational DT.

Tory Horton who @Thats2 mentioned is absolutely that way as well. You hear him interviewed and it’s easy to see that Brad and Dan would love the person. Great WR to boot.

Leonard Taylor is so damn freaky. Mario mismanaging another super talented kid. And I generally think highly of Cristoball but between in game gaffes and not maximizing the no doubter pros he definitely has some warts.

Also, Terrion Arnold would be a nice Cooper DeJean consolation prize. Similar versatility but not as refined.

His bro is a freshman at Nebraska who is now starting. They expect him to follow in his brother’s footsteps.

Don’t you think Newton is going quite high?

Right, and I’m definitely basing it off Taylor’s upside, which IMO is as high as any DT in the class. But I don’t know anything about his work ethic, how his teammates like him, etc… Haven’t looked that into him that much yet.

This year, I really think I’m going to focus on OL, DL, CB. They could use help all along both lines and CB is a pressing need. I’d be surprised to not see these be addressed quickly in the draft next year.

Love the OT and DT class. Coming around on CB. Edge looks pretty meh.

unfortunately……
likely will be long gone before the Lions are on the clock…

I haven’t had much time to do much of any in-season scouting yet this year. Switching careers, so work full time plus school full time has really eaten into any life that I had before. lol. Hoping I get a chance to at some point this season.

I do like Mo Kamara at edge and I think we will. Motor that never stops and some skill as a pass rusher. Short though. Will be curious if he’s got that long limbed short guy thing going on. Day 3 guy as well I’d assume.

I haven’t made any independent decisions about draftable players yet nor should I. Ever. History has proved this over and over again. Still, I’ll have opinions by early February and will share them. By then, I’ll have positional priorities to sift through the possibilities. I’m always game for the futility of predicting what Brad will do in April.

Having looked through Dane Brugler’s top 50 the other day, I did pause on Quinyon Mitchell much longer than most, thinking of how well he could fit with the Lions. Definitely might could.
