You make fair points and I’m sure I won’t convince you, but I don’t think it’s accurate to dismiss the Senior Bowl as just an “all-star game.” It’s a full week of practice and play matching up with the best seniors in the country, in front of scouts from every NFL team. No, that’s not the same as watching a guy over a three year SEC career. But it’s a pretty damn good evaluation period, against good competition, in a high-pressure situation where everybody is auditioning in front of their future employers and millions of dollars are literally on the line. It’s definitely enough reps to tell if a smaller school prospect just can’t hang with top talent.

Again… he has garbage film. What games have you watched from him? I wouldnt touch him before the late 3rd. DJ ranked him 126 overall. His footwork alone says he isnt ready to contribute year 1.

and… he may not have played top teams in a regular basis…

but he did play some top teams.

Sack… forced fumble… and fumble recovery….
against Notre Dame.

at the 2:38 mark of video…

Could you correct his footwork so he is ready year two is also a question?

I’m not very high on his tape either, but I wouldn’t call it garbage. In fact I’d call it pretty typical of someone early in his career. Now he’s a little further along in his career than a newbie, so you’d hope his tape was further along as well, but he’s still quite young. The upside’s pretty easy to see. But I agree the tape is 3-4th round right now.

Also there’s a deep, deep history of drafting OTs based on their traits and seeing them hit. I mean Jordan Mailata had never even played the game before when the Eagles drafted him. Brian O’Neill, Terron Armstead, Kolton Miller, Tyler Smith, Austin Jackson, etc… were all drafted based on what they could be rather than what they were. There’s been a few busts too of course (Isaiah Wilson), but it’s a tried and true method of finding talent at a position where it’s difficult to find talent.

He came from Toledo with hi marks having caught 45 passes for 533 yards and 16 TD’s his senior year. There was hi hopes for Michael Roberts, they lasted for about 5 minutes. I think when your competition is a question mark, you really need to pay more attention to things like RAS scores. Roberts sucked, Mitchell killed it. IMO Mitchell may not be the best CB in this draft but I believe he deserves to be in the first by any metric.

BTW, not sure we could offer what the Steelers can.

My gut tells me the trade is going to be somebody who is a real difference maker. I see the most likely candidates being Dallas Turner first, if he falls (I’ve seen him top 10 in a few mocks) and then maybe Jared Verse (who I’ve seen anywhere from like 11 to 25ish). We aren’t dying for any one position, so it only makes sense that they fall in love and go get the guy they want. As long as they can plug in some depth and development in the back end of the draft. Can anybody see them trading up for an OLineman? He’d have to be a tackle, IMO, that could play guard but the positional value isn’t there (wouldn’t be the first time they don’t care about that).

My gut also tells me its taco tuesday so it should be viewed with suspicion.

Yeah all my gut does is cause me problems.

You’re in luck, here’s your answer. And as a plus, it goes well with Vodka if you don’t have any other mix.

Ready as a backup year 2 sure. The oline experts ive watched break him down all seem to agree that he has talent. But he will take a couple years to get there. I personally dont want to spend a 1st on someone who many rate as a 4th rounder and who needs multiple years to develop. That doesn’t fit our current time frame in my opinion. I absolutely love drafting oline. But i dont want to reach for someone who wont help us next year just because he is Penei’s cousin. We didnt reach to draft any of his brothers so why reach for is cousin?

I would love to draft Graham Barton in the first, but he is probably gone in the top 20 picks.

The difference is Sewell’s brothers had physical limitations. One was slow and couldn’t cover, the other light in the shorts.

Suamataia is 6 foot 5… 330 pounds running a 5 flat. His RAS score is near perfect. Hank Fraley could mold that into a stud IMO. But ur right it could take time.

Ultimately I trust the villain

I don’t care who it is as long as they make an impact. I wouldn’t be mad at them trading up for another WR honestly. If they feel like that’s what the team needs then so be it. I saw in another thread about them trading up for Bowers, I wouldn’t be mad a bit. If they’re trading up that means it someone they really covet. I trust Brad & Co.

The Senior Bowl has done a good job of projecting NFL talent because it puts the top players on the same field. Its the rare opportunity to do that in football. Basketball can do it regularly. And when they throw a “kid” on the court with existing NBA players or against other top college kids, the kids that stand out tend to have a good chance at success going forward. In basketball it is a small sample size. But it flushes out those who “belong” in a hurry. It removes scheme and surrounding cast advantages some players have. All that is left is the player up against other players. Mitchell proved he belonged and any doubts about his ability to transition smaller school success to a bigger stage was put to rest.

I remember when a kid playing basketball was never higher than the 3rd leading scorer on his own college team. But during the offseason process for the NBA, they were able to put him on the same court with the other top prospects man to man without scheme or usage dictating what happened on the court. The “buzz” for this kid grew quick and loud, and he was out there dominating the competition. His name is Vince Carter.

Totally with you Rem. I just don’t think BH has the patients to sit and wait until 29, knowing the first round level talent without flags runs out in the middle of the first round. With that, there are several guys I love and I think the Lions love and one of these guys are going to drop further than expected. That is where to me the positional value, team need and football character will be too tempting to stand pat and having to debate taking a 2nd round talent at 29. Here are my guys for that trade up in order:

Fuaga - Dude is another Sewell but due to the QB’s, WR’s and one or two OT’s that will go, I have him going somewhere between 10-15. Maybe that magic #12 pick will appeal to BH once more and we can snag him. I know we just signed Glasgow to a not super cheap contract. But I think Zeitler is a better OG than Glasgow is. PFF scores be darned. But let them all compete and when the dust settles, I think Fuaga ends up at LG so Zeitler can stay at RG and GG moves to swing IOL. Then next year you let Decker move on, move Sewell to left and install Fuaga at RT. Then you can go get another OG or worst case resign Zeitler move GG back into the lineup or maybe Sorsdal is ready.

Odunze - Don’t see him falling very far, but if Harrison and Nabers go ahead of him, 4 QB’s go, a couple OT’s a couple EDGE guys and we are at 11 and he’s a huge value there.

Turner - Doubt it as I think he’s the first EDGE off the board, but maybe someone is willing to roll the dice on Latu instead and the two guys I have ahead of him here go instead, again it’s possible.

Arnold - I just like the pedigree a little more and take that and the competition he faced over the athletic profile of Mitchell, but flip a coin for me.

Mitchell - Again he’s right there with Arnold and either one becomes CB2 day one with CB1 traits in short order. Either of these guys gives our defense a massive boost and deliver more than Cam Sutton did, even as rookies IMHO.

These are the guys I make a big swing for which will take high cost to do. I’d be fine with that cost for these guys. Then there are the guys who we won’t need to move into that top 15 zone for that I’d still love to get and who I don’t think will be there at 29.

This is easy,
I’d trade up to 3 and take JJ. No brainer. If we dont and the Vikes get him then the NFC Norris will have Jordan Love, Caleb Williams, JJ and we have Goff. I’m a big Goff fan but we will be facing those guys twice a year, 5-10-15 years down the road.

LIons dont really have any pressing needs that they cant find in later rounds and I believe JJ will be better than Goff in a year. He’s 100 X’s as athletic, has a better arm, makes great decisions and is as good in the locker room as anyone. I feel like we will regret being forced to play him 2X a year for the next 5-15.

Call me whacky.

I think you’ll be lucky if that’s the worst you get called for this suggestion!

That would be expected here, I’m comfortable with it.
