Why Duke DT Would Make Brad Holmes 'Pound the Table'

Which we’ve been saying on here for months. Three-time captains don’t grow on trees (Mason McCormick and Taulia Tagovailoa are the only other ones in this class iirc)

Ergo John Maakaron has been reading it on here for months.

If John Maakaron is reading this, you suck!

Pounding tables? I’ve always preffered flipping them.

I’d be happy if he was our pick in round 3.

Would you take him over Wingo?

That’s a good question. Yes, I would give Carter the edge just because of the power he can generate on a straight bull rush while still protecting his gaps. Wingo may give you a few more splash plays on a pass rush but he is shooting gaps to get through. I think Carter has one of the highest floors of all the players in the draft. Like you just know what you are getting. I think Carter can play both nose and 3T while Wingo is a 3T only. Both are just good hard workers you want on your team.

That’s the right neighborhood:

70 DeWayne Carter Duke Sr DL 7 6-3 305

9. DI DEWAYNE CARTER, DUKE

PFF BIG BOARD RANK: 109

Carter isn’t an elite physical presence, but he is a versatile, smart and consistent football player in both the run and pass games. He projects as a high-floor rotational player with starting potential.

I have them ranked basically right next to each other, but would probably lean Wingo because of his age. Who knows how much better Wingo will be when he’s the same age as Carter 2.5 years from now?

I think they fill pretty different needs. Carter seems perfect for that 3rd DT that can pitch in at NT in a pinch. Given how we play defense I’d think Wingo would be a pass rush sub package guy.

They definitely have different skill sets, so you’re right it would probably come down to what the FO wanted. Because both are gonna check all the rest of the boxes.

Personally I think Alim can be that 3T who pitches in at NT, while that pass-rushing 3T is something we don’t really have at all. But I also think Carter offers some upside there. Not as much as Wingo, but they might prefer his more all-around game.

Fair point about Alim. If we’re going for an interior pass rushing specialist after round 1 I’d prefer Hall. Although Hall may go much earlier than Wingo.

He’d be great from a talent and fit standpoint (though I think he’s going pretty high in the 2nd), but I don’t know that he’s a fit culture-wise. Not since Charlie Campbell reported about the character questions. I know we brought him in, but we brought Carter in last year too.

Right. Wingo has a bit more twitch,I’d lean toward him in the early third. Yet, if you’re unsure whether you’re going to re-sign Alim, I’d be looking at first rounders who fall to 29, maybe Newton. I like Fiske and even Smith a little bit more than Wingo.
Fiske>Smith>Wingo>Carter for day 2.

He definitely sounds like a Lion to me. And his highlights show a lot of hustle/motor. This is where I wish we had that third rounder back.

Agree, it seemed like a high price for a potential one year rental.
