To be fair I was in this same camp last year to a lesser extent.
I hated the Moseley and Davenport signings, and the reliance on DPJ going into camp. The Moseley and Davenport fears were immediately confirmed, and so was DPJ, but then Brad pulled a Tim Patrick out of the hat…
We don’t have a single BAD contract on our books right now, and the only 2 that can even really be questioned at Glass and Barnes. Can GG return to 23’ form? Will Barnes provide enough juice to be relief on in the pass rush and justify his 3 yr 8M AAV price tag? Let’s keep in mind these are sub 9M per per deals, so that alone says something about what Brad and the “cap-ologists” have done.
Every 7-8M per bench player erodes the ability to pay top starters, top dollars.
The cap carries over, so spending an extra 12-15M on peace of mind is stealing 3-4M “per year” of of what a Branch or Laporta extension looks like.
Let’s say Z demands 10M and Simmons or Blackmon 6-7M.
A) if you were Blackmon at age 26 and coming off a solid year, would you pick being buried behind Branch and Kerby for your prove it deal? My guy says there is a contender that might have 800 safety/NB snaps available right now
B) if you were Holmes and watched a 59 rated season, after a 65 rated 2023 from Simmons- would you burn 6-7M of future cash? That’s 10% of Laporta’s next deal to hopefully not play, and or play badly. Also- if you were Simmons would you pick the bench in Detroit and effectively end your career?
C) Avonte Maddox has played NB, FS and SS and is 29 coming off a healthy 17 game season.
Again…
Hutch
Davenport
Hassanein/Muhammad
Karlaftis
Danna
FAU
Nolan
J Hunt
Huff
Joseph
Branch
Maddox
J Hicks
B Cook
Mike Edwards
S Brown
Blankenship
Makuba
FWIW teams start 2 DEs and 2 safeties typically. That’s the two teams who have managed 5 of the last 6 SB appearances between them and the last 3 wins…
The fact that Maddox and Davenport have proven quality NFL players when healthy, but we do also have rookie blood coming into to compete for DE2 and S3 is good enough for me.
When a team gets crushed by injuries it typically looks like what happened in SF or Miami last year… not 15-2
The reality is nobody other than Philly has better depth than us in the NFL.
I would say Hutch is the #1 edge
Kerby and Branch are safety #1 and #2
