The signing bonus is going to be right around $10M, that’s not the issue.
The total contract is going to be fully guaranteed at around $18M, that’s not the issue.
The payment date of the signing bonus could be an issue (if the Lions want to make sure they have cash in bank to extend Jonah/Jared/others).
The 2024-2026 salaries (whether roster bonuses, workout bonuses or base salary), it’s all guaranteed but the bonuses are paid earlier in the year).
It could be Gibb’s agents have been busy with other players or the Lions group has been busy with other stuff and they just haven’t connected to hammer out all the minor details.
Branch and his agent are negotiating guaranteed money in the 3rd year. This is something that the agents and the player need to do for future draft picks. i.e. LaPorta got his entire 3rd year guaranteed plus $408K of his $2M 4th year salary, where the 34th pick in the 2022 draft (Christian Watson) got his 3rd year guaranteed, but only $150K of his 4th year.
The same thing with branch, his signing bonus will be slightly more than $2.8M and his total contract will be slightly more than $8M. The 45th pick in the 2022 draft (David Ojabo) got $700K of his 3rd year salary guaranteed. Branch and his agent and the Lions are arguing over that guarantee . . . . it’ll likely come in at around $1M of his 3rd year guaranteed. This is something they need to do for the NFLPA and future draft picks.
Good information
The pattern actually says something really interesting about the top half of round 1.
- Will Anderson (#3) is the outlier since 80% of the top-5 haven’t signed.
- From 12-16 OT Broderick Jones (#14) is the outlier since 80% of them haven’t signed either.
- Gibbs is in the norm for his draft range.
So, there’s apparently less negotiating room after the midpoint because 87% of the guys from 17-32 have signed.
It may not even be about the money. It could just be specific language in the contract. Who was the rookie that held out of OTA’s a couple years ago because his contract didn’t have clauses that protected him in case he was injured?
