I think we are going to have to pick our poison and feel ok if we get one OT or DE (not both) that will be good enough to be the better starting option than our FA acquisitions, come September. As the draft boards are starting to solidify and more and more info is getting out, some things are moving to the “I think I know” zone. What I think I know is that OT’s and DE’s are going to litter the picks ahead of us at 17. The elite ones are going to go in the top 10 and IMO there will be teams below us trying to get into that top 10 to get one of them. So are we going to play that game too? With Holmes I’m saying it’s 60/40 we move up. HIS guy isn’t going to be around at 17. I think he too sees that he’s probably going to only get one position upgraded with a starter and it will be with his first pick. If that is the case, then why not trade up and get the better starter, than two guys and neither can start over Borom or Wannum?
Be prepared for a big costly move up to 8 and us taking Monroe Freeling. He’s just the toolsiest guy with the size RAS and he’ll go higher than has been proposed most of the runup. Now most sites have him going in that #3 OT range and that pick is going to go pretty high. I’m saying no way he makes it to 17. I’m sure BH is high on him.
Mags/Fano will be super costly to move up for IMO if we want into that action. Too rich. Whether we move up or not, our 2nd round pick isn’t going to bring us a guy who will be taking more snaps at RDE1 than Wonnum or RT1 than Borom respectively. I feel like there are “more” DE’s that could contribute for us in that 17-50 area than an OT that would start over Borom at RT. Certainly no LT’s that would be a starting option over moving Sewell. So the deeper position award IMO goes to EDGE.
For me I’m going with drafting the RDE1 first. Yes, DE is deeper, but Borom is a vet and I think having a vet is more important at OT, than it is as a flamethrower trying to hunt QB’s. There are several guys I like that could rotate with Wonnum and build snap counts over his rookie season. I think we are going to need a lot of help and things to go right on defense this year. The offense already has a ton of resources at their disposal led by the costliest guy on the team by far. Again, it’s going to come down to the pass rush. If we can - we can go far. If we can’t, we’ll be struggling to make the playoffs. Get the better DE. What do you guys think?
I agree but I would open to that being a pass rush specialist.
Addressing OT first and then getting a 3rd down option to pair with Wonnum sounds like both an attainable and desirable solution. Wonnum should be quite good on early downs.
You can duct tape a functional DE platoon. You can’t do that at OT.
I think people forget that when championship teams are forged it’s often on the backs of a few iffy spots where guys step up and solidify things.
If we go into the season with Borom, Manu, Frazier and a 4th round OT we really like (Davis remains my preferred option) then I’m content. Is it a bit dicey? Sure, but there are enough redundancies for me to delude myself into believing in that solution.
What’s wrong w J Sundell? We would have loved to have him last year
Also, odds are good that Borom could easily get Goff killed. Dude has cinder blocks for feet at time, let’s please draft an OT.
We can plug either a pass rush specialist or a run edge specialist and make due, but this team isnt built to have a cement block RT cuz our QB already has cement in his sneakers
I guess I’m the odd man out here. I am looking for a trade down, get extra picks and believing I can get either Blake Miller or Max Iheanachor in the 20s and Gabe Jacas or Zion Young at 50. Any 2 of those 4 and I am thrilled. I do think that is doable
Nothing is wrong with either. I think @Wrath-SRT’s point was instead that there was a ton of uncertainty with both of those spots and between their play, game scripts and scheme workarounds things solidified enough that it all worked out splendidly.
This is exactly where I’m at. We need to get a third round pick. Trade Down and draft one of the guys mentioned and then get your pass rusher 2nd round and someone to play next to Campbell on the third round.
I think both wonnum and Borum will be starting week 1. Unless someone drops or we trade pretty far up to grab one of the top guys I don’t see a rookie starter on the OL or DL week 1.
Exactly this. I am aware that simulators are not real life and there are always unexpected runs at positions in the draft. That said when I run simulators I am usually able to get either Blake or Max at 23-27 and Gabe or Zion at 50. I usually go safety after that but LB is good to
