they made him stafford and suh the highest paid players. it was bad salary cap timing for the lions to have to pay those three peak money just before the new rookie pay slots
i don’t think the lions were being cheap. the reason we didn’t win in 2014 is because the offense with a ton of talent, underperformed and squandered the best defense we’ve had in decades
Line was not good,no running game, also not smart coaching staffs . So players regressed
Irresponsible spending = Super Bowl
The correlation is 1
Calvin must have been indulging in too much of his favorite medicine to notice that the Patriots won a bunch of titles while they routinely were well below the salary cap for many of those years.
Last year the Seahawks finished the season with $15 million under the cap.
Yeah, I don’t think there’s a huge correlation between spending and winning the Super Bowl. There’s plenty of teams who have spent like drunken sailors and haven’t won a damn thing. There’s other smaller market teams, Chiefs, Patriots, and Steelers come to mind, who are on the lower end of the spending spectrum, but put out some very competitive teams and win SBs.
Calvin should start posting on The Den, so he could add his voice to our eternal All-in/Sustained Excellence mudwrestling. Also, I could tell him he don’t know sh*t about football.
How did the Patriots do it 6 times in 19 years, and, have 19 winning seasons in a row?
They cared more about winning than $$$$$$$$$$$$.
Ask Tom Brady how they did it. Not a rich, quitter.
I always been able to pick the super bowl winner. Its the team that has good special teams including kicking, way above average running game, top notch pass rush and pass defense, way above avg QB and top notch receiving core.
You take one of those elements out and that team is a also ran, nice try but no cigar team. With that said there are only a couple of teams that fit that bill.
Of the 32 you can eliminate about 28 right now as not having a chance.
So you are saying a team that is good in all phases?
Good special teams
Good Offense
Good Defense
That is gist of that post.
Trent Dilfer begs to differ as does Brad Johnson or a few other examples.
Anyways it not always about being great in all phases it is about putting it all together at the right time like 2011 Giants or 2007 Giants or 2000 Baltimore etc. Plenty of examples of teams that just put it together at right time.
Those teams were all top heavy. Great front line talent at some positions, but as soon as players started getting nicked up the replacements were worse than the street guys we bring up today
So the “go all in crowd” is in favor of Calvin’s comments. Shocker.
Listen if some of you want F the future for a championship so be it. It doesn’t always mean it works out like that. LA’s upswing after their down year following their Win is an example……but I want no part of a Championship singular run and then back to what we experienced in the 90’s and the 2000’s. Ya’ll remember the wings titles? Remember the Pistons titles? Have ya’ll enjoyed the last 16 years of Wings hockey? How about the pistons minus the last 2 years?
Give me what we got. A sustained success of 10-12 win seasons and division titles and a shot at the super bowl every year for the next 10-14 years. It’s not fun knowing the season is over October 1. Remember those years? They sucked.
Now go get quality players…….we need to…..but not at the cost of the future.
Right the contracts top 5 picks were getting in the old rookie pay scale were bonkers. We were being punished financially for sucking.
