Awesome, I was coming to quote this exact verse.
Marty, I donât know if you come from a Christian background, but this is from Matthew 6 verses 1-4.
Giving to the Needy
"Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."
The idea is exactly what Jane said. I also do not think the people you made your offer to are assholes. Do they know you personally? Do they know everything you yourself are going through? If so, they may have felt bad accepting money from you that they know you need.
As others already pointed out, what you donât know is how your act was perceived. Even though they turned it down, inside they may feel blessed to know you. If they donât know you, they may feel blessed that someone reached out and cared in a bad time for them. If they didnât care, then you saved 200 bucks. Life isnât about the result, we cannot control that. All we can control is the process in which we live, which @Mr.Peabody nailed.
Also, make that another Vokey wedge please. Iâll send you over shipping information.
For the record, one of the most gracious gifts I ever received, was a Chipotle burrito. It happened on a day that I had spent the literal last of my money, buying a Christmas tree. I had just gone through a big life change and lost a big number of my supposed âChristian friendsâ, many who did not even know the real story of what happened. They fell for the gossip. I had to start my life over, had a large amount of money stolen from me, and was fighting every legal battle possible to get it back. In the meantime, I was left completely broke and had to get help from others. I bought a Christmas tree so my new apartment would at least have some semblance of Christmas for my boy.
I was at work and barely holding it together trying to figure out how I was going to pay bills. My coworker said âLetâs go out to lunch.â I told him sure, but I wasnât going to order anything today. He just said âthatâs cool man.â We went out to lunch, and he ordered two burritos. He looked at me and said, I can tell you need it. I almost broke down in Chipotle. I thanked him, and swore I would never forget it. That coworker, is also a Jehovahâs Witness. Someone that Christianâs spar with over religion. Guess what? Beginning that day, I called him Brother. He showed what it means to act truly Christ like, far more than my supposed âChristian friendsâ. He is still my Brother to this day.
My life went through a full reset that year, and I came out much better on the other side. As the Bible often talks about, you have to put things to the fire to test it. What is left, thatâs what you know is true and pure. My probably most quoted Bible verse is Matthew 7:20. âTherefore by their fruits, you will know them.â Lots of people will tell you things. How they act and treat people, especially when they think no one is watching, is how you will know the real ones.
FYI, on this message board, there are a LOT of real ones. They know who they are too.
And it now applies to like six human beings on the planet ![]()
Really? Sheesh. I admit Iâve given up on baseball, but I didnât know we didnât have any .300 hitters any more.
They are mostly Blue Jays ![]()
I donât know the exact number but it is far less frequent than it used to be.
The days of Boggs and Gwynn are long gone then. Oh well, like I said I havenât paid any attention in years.
Honestly you should. I really like the pitch clock. 4 hour games are now 2.5 hours and much more enjoyable IMO. The NFL is far worse with 80 percent commercials over 3.5 hours
Itâs less about the game itself and more about the MLB system. I hate any system that lets teams buy success. I hate that small market teams have to do everything right for one chance at a run⌠then get picked apart by the rich teams. I canât believe that Ohtani contract is real.
I just donât have it in me to get invested in a sport when the playing field isnât level.
And I know Iâm a little bit of a hypocrite given my avatar (European soccer operates very similar to baseball), but that love got in during my formative years, long before the system got screwed. All I can do now is rail about it.
All fair. The MLB system does need major changes. The contract runs out after this season. I think a Strike is likely next offseason
I really doubt theyâll ever get that genie back in the bottle though. Players wonât let them.
It depends if you rub it the right way! ![]()
Thatâs how you make it grow.
Marty your a good dude, just keep being you and everything else will take care of itself. You have a big heart and you share with people.dont let a bad experience change who you are and what you believe. You were trying to give help to those in need the world definitely needs that.
Marty,
The gift of giving is YOUR gift, not how the others react. Be grateful youâre in a position to be able to offer help to a family and youâre not the one needing help this year.
Practice altruism. Youâre a good dude with a big heart, take pride in your selflisness.
conceal the money in some sort of card and envelope.
I also hate the way MLB is ran currently. The Ohtani contract is real, but I hate that it was legal to structure it the way that they did.
This may be the issue.
This is a reason why I live the 12 steps of recoveryâŚ.
I am powerless over others and how they react to me.
I have a homeless guy (assuming he wasnât a charlatan) a hamburger I had gotten and as I drove away he tossed it to the groundâŚ.
Before recovery, Iâd have stopped and got into an altercation⌠but in that moment, I simply was disappointed and then moved on⌠even said a prayer for the shit as I used to be a selfish asshole myselfâŚ.
donât let others stop you from being youâŚ.
Itâs ok to not be ok; we just have to be working on it! ![]()

Damn thatâs a lot of 2 bit hoe dough. If they ask you to leave it on the dresser next to the false teeth youâre golden.
