Your 2nd favorite Lions RB?

Everyone’s favorite Lion’s RB is Barry, I was just curious who your 2nd favorite RB is/was and why?

Billy Sims bc of the Kung fu kick. Sims is well before my time but that’s one of my favorite plays of all time.

Jahvid Best when healthy was absolutely electric. Fun to watch. The TD run against the Bears on MNF is still one of my favorite Lions plays.

Sims. He was playing when I just started to pay a little bit of attention to them, plus my father-in-law talks about running into him a time or two while he was working at the dome. Good guy.

I liked Kevin Smith more than most. In the dislike thread, there are several who share how they dislike gifted players who under-perform. Smith is opposite that. I got the sense that he worked hard for everything he’s done. His upright style and the high mileage from UCF didn’t bode well for his NFL career, but he kept on running. I also liked Cherilus more than most. He was like big brother to Smith, being the guy there clearing the pile to help Smith up. Wish I had a picture of those two in my mancave with Gosder helping Smith off the turf.

For sure Kevin smith and Ron Rivers.

I was so stoked to see rivers run against Carolina in the first game after Barry retired, have a great game and thought he could’ve been something. Alas…

My top 3 in no particular order are:

Ron rivers
Kevin smith
Kevin Jones

It’s gonna be Jones for me as well. I wasn’t around to enjoy Sims, but I get that choice. Give me some Schlesinger and I’m good. I still remember how pumped I was for Leshoure… pffft.

Have you seen what his boy is doing at Fresno State? He looks better than his dad, in my opinion.

For me…yup. Loved that guy! His OL was pathetic.

I was in a bar in Chicago when that happened. I couldn’t exactly contain myself… so… Yeah that was memorable… Glad I’m filled with charm…

I was so freaking pumped when we drafted him (KJ). I think we moved up into the bottom of the frist after taking Roy W up top. I had such high hopes for that dude. Thousand yard rookie season… then kept running into a brick wall moving backwards. Loved Best as well. Nostalgia says Sims. Smart-azz in me says Calhoun. Head says… Swift.

This is a tough question for me, considering my time started with Barry.
That said, I guess I’ve been excited about a few before their careers were derailed.

RBs I had high hopes for:

  • James Stewart
  • Olandis Gary
  • Greg Hill
  • Kevin Jones
  • Jahvid Best
  • Kevin Smith

All had a reoccurring theme with injuries sadly

My favorite of the bunch was probably Jones.
Gary, Hill and Stewart came in as free agents and I truly believed they would make at least a difference.

Growing up, I used to pretend I was No. 42 Altie Taylor.

My memory of the Billy Sims era is hazy because I was living in Bengals land during their Super Bowl heyday and, after that, in college.

I’d say Kevin Jones.

Jones had 906 yards in the last 8 games of his rookie season and 1133 yards overall, plus another 180 receiving and TDs overall. It looked like Jones was the RB of the future.

To put that remarkable feat into perspective:

2004 leading rusher, Curtis Martin, who had 1697 yards on the season, had 832 yards in the last 8 games.

Shaun Alexander, who had 1696 yards, had 820 yards in the last 8 games.

Corey Dillon, who had 1635 yards, had 886 yards over the last 8 games.

Edge James, who had 1548 yards, had 757 yards in the last 8 games.

Tiki Barber, who had 1518 yards, had 698 yards over the last 8 games.

Rudi Johnson, who had 1454 yards, had 771 yards over the last 8 games.

La Daninian T, who had 1335 yards, had 682 yards in the last 7 games he played (he missed one in the last 8).

I have not, I didn’t know he had a son there! I’ll check it out and see what I can find. Thank you for the heads up!
