Your Take - State Of OL

Really? You don’t recall their concerns after he lost every rep in the pit drill? Or that he’s “slow legged, stuff, and lacks punch”? I’ve read and heard all these comments the last 2 weeks

This was before the game…

Who are you quoting?

I trust Justin. I don’t particularly trust loads of the beat. Especially when you get to the John M and Mike Payton fringes. Though calling that part of the beat is rather generous.

Who is this Dan Campbell guy? I wonder if he knows ball.

Risdon, who I trust more than most… Man, can’t imagine Campbell endorsing his own players, that must be the end of it :man_shrugging:

Are you suggesting that Dan isn’t a straight shooter? If so I vehemently disagree with that perspective.

I leave the Risdon thing alone. I know that some here have personal relationships with the man and he does seem like a good person.

But the positive hype on Frazier was fairly ubiquitous from what I could tell. I haven’t been listening to a ton of the fluff but Schmitt was positive about him prior to last week.

Here are Dan’s full comments. Seems genuine to me.

His background is intriguing playing all those different spots in college. Borom only on a 1 year deal and Manu probably getting cut. Frazier developing into the backup swing tackle would be huge for the future.

No dog in this race but interesting rogers and Risdon would have opposite takes. Unless of course Justin is going off one or two reps he saw and Risdon has watched more, or Risdon is going off just a day he may have seen.

I’m sure neither have a complete picture as it’s impossible for one person to watch every position group every day. So even with the trusted beat writers it’s always an incomplete picture.

For the record rogers and Risdon are probably the two of the top five in my opinion, birkett and pouncy being the others, unless I’m forgetting someone. Pride of Detroit I kinda lump together as one, although I think that’s mostly Reisman and Schlitt.

Back to your regularly scheduled OL program.

I’m taking a somewhat optimistic view of the O-line. I’m not confident they’ll be top 5, but I do have a little bit of confidence we won’t be as vulnerable up the middle as we were last year. The OL doesn’t have to be top 5 for the offense/team to be successful. I do expect some struggles early on as the line gels, but things should be better. Scruggs/Seth has to be better than Glasgow, Tate should have a nice jump (or at least be somewhat better than last year). LG is a question mark, but I trust they’ll figure it out. Once Mays returns, there may be a slight setback as he gels with the line, but hopefully it’s all coming together the latter half of the season and into the playoffs. Having the expected ‘tougher teams’ the latter half of the year will help as well.

Most of what I heard about Frazier in camp had been positive, but it wasn’t 100% of it.

But it’s still so early, and Frazier missed a lot of his rookie season. He could struggle for a year and I’d still be patient with him. He’s a backup and a 6th round pick, gotta let him get his feet wet for a while.

When have you ever seen Dan Campbell speak negatively of his players when they do what he asks? He’s a super positive guy, I would never expect him to be critical of a player, even when he’s struggling.

The point is still valid, Frazier could be making too many mental mistakes caused by trying to play too many positions.

And that may be how it develops over time. But right now we have a ton of uncertainty. If they think that his best use case in the near term is to be a versatile floor setting piece on the OL then I trust their judgment. I’m not going to overreact to one wretched preseason game

5th… But I agree, he’s going to take his lumps, but I also think there could be a bit of friendly fire here by overwhelming him. I do see him as a backup swing OT as @stephenboyd57 said

Why are you making a false equivalency? The absence of criticism does not equate to applauding a players’ efforts.

Could be? Sure. Is that the degree of certainty you look for when changing course in your life or in any organization that you are in charge of decision making. Do you pivot off of a “could be”?

It is interesting… The bad game is even more interesting… Hopefully it’s a one off

Plus as we know all too well injuries happen. He definitely makes the roster IMO with that versatility.

I thought he looked better at LT, it was RG where he struggled. That would kinda track with the reports

Bc you’re taking his comments as absolute, where there is obviously going to be bias… I’m merely pointing out that DC isn’t a non bias source for info

It is definitely something that’d give me cause for reevaluation to make sure my course is correct… They’ve done this with Sorsdal as well and he’s never been able to catch on at either position either. It’s a discussion worth having… What’s best for the player/team now vs the future

Yeah he does. I don’t think the switching positions is a big deal, especially if he did it in college, he clearly has experience everywhere. I get there are different protections, stances, whatever but geez he’s not launching a spaceship or doing brain surgery, block the bad guys! Sometimes I feel like way too much is made out of that kinda stuff

Of note though. He played Right guard vs the Bengals starters. And he played left tackle vs the 2nd and 3rd stringers

Ahh ok that’s fair

I read he was looking better at guard :man_shrugging: that’s the frustrating part, there are multiple reports, none of us can personally say which is correct based off of seeing it, other than the preseason game
